One Hit Away is a gripping, startling account into addiction, compassion, and ultimate salvation. It is powerful because of its honesty. Raw without being sensationalistic, this harrowing account of Jordan’s journey provides insight and compassion into the struggle of addiction. It is an important, engrossing book that is hard to put down." (Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life)

At the age of 24, Jordan Barnes woke up next to a lifeless body, rifled through his dead friends’ pockets for any remaining heroin, and went right back to using. Strung out and homeless during the supposed best years of his life, there was no clear way out of the opioid crisis ravaging the streets of Portland, Oregon. But though Jordan had long accepted his fate, his parents still held out hope and would do everything in their power to get him the help he so desperately needed.

After a harrowing journey that proves the life of an addict will always get worse, never better, Jordan found himself at the gates of Sand Island, Hawaii’s most notorious two-year inpatient treatment facility. He soon discovers that though his heart was in the right place, the hardest battle of his life was yet to come.

One Hit Away is his arduous and unlikely true story of recovery, rehabilitation, and redemption.

"One Hit Away takes you on a journey you won't forget. An honest expression of such a common and hardcore reality is so necessary. This memoir is a work of art, truth, and healing on a level many of us have yet to encounter." (Kayleon Dortch-Elliott, author of One Day at a Time: Remaining in Step)

“Raw. Brutal. Jaw-dropping.” (Kylie LeBlanc, addictstripple.com)

Unapologetically raw and authentic

Jordan spares no gritty, emotional detail of his journey through recovery. His transparency inspires authentic relatability to the deepest core of many different layers of addiction and what it takes to conquer it. Hope

A story well written about a man's journey to recovery.
This memoir allows you to hear both sides of addiction, one being in active addiction & the other being about his recovery. It gives hope to many to know that we do recover!!
The narrator did very well & I found his voice easy to listen to. He gave each character their own voice in a way.
Highly recommended listening to this book as you wont be disappointed.

Dark, Gritty and INSPIRING

Honest and raw book about addiction and recovery. I'm a fellow heroin addict in recovery and this book really resonated with me. This book gives a look into the world of addiction, homelessness, and proves that recovery IS possible. While being dark in parts the author never loses his sense of humor and the story is overall one of love and hope. The narrator also did a great job portraying the desperation of heroin addiction. highly recommend to anyone in recovery, still struggling with addiction, or to anyone who loves an addict and wants to gain insight.

don't let the award fool you

sorry to say, but this book SUCKED. This guy had more than most addicts have and maybe suffered for a couple of years. story of spoiled little rich boy goes to college and gets strung out and has family that pulls strings and never gives up on him. I found myself gagging listening to it.

Wow!

I have never been so touched from a book.
I decided to download this book because I also had my own struggles and found my way to a positive/clean life. (also live in the same area so that grabbed my attention). I am glad I decided on this book. Great amount of details but never did I feel like it was overboard.
I have so much excitement for Jordan and his family. I feel proud that he found a way to a new life. I have to admit that his parents really grabbed my heart. He has terrific parents and my heart broke for them when listening.
I never thought the ending would be that way- broke my heart. All I could think about is Jordan’s parents. I am a mother and I couldn’t even imagine.
Another part is the sad truth about Portland, OR (I never go downtown and recently did and all I can say is what a sad life..) we are flooded with homeless people just like Jordan explained. Drugs are taking over so many people.
I wish I could have my nephew listen to this book. He also is a addict and I pray he can find his way before it’s not a option anymore.

I would absolutely recommend this book.

Loved it. I can identify with several stories.

I really enjoyed this book because i can identify with the character, and how he struggled with an addiction . It's strengthening to know that he made it to sobriety. What an inspiration for me and for everyone . He poured his heart out with no lies all truth .

Amazing

If you’re looking for hope, this is the book for you. Jordan was as down and out as an addict can get and is now a published author. I read this in two days and didn’t want it to end. Thank you for sharing your struggles and awesome outcome from the fight you fought hard!
