Many investors, including some with substantial portfolios, have only the sketchiest idea of how the stock market works. The reason, say Lynch and Rothchild, is that the basics of investing aren't taught in school. At a time when individuals have to make important decisions about saving for college and 401(k) retirement funds, this failure to provide a basic education in investing can have tragic consequences.

The legendary investor shows how to identify and master the cycles that govern the markets. We all know markets rise and fall, but when should you pull out, and when should you stay in? The answer is never black or white, but is best reached through a keen understanding of the reasons behind the rhythm of cycles. Confidence about where we are in a cycle comes when you learn the patterns of ups and downs that influence not just economics, markets and companies, but also human psychology and the investing behaviors that result.

Hungarian by birth, Nicolas Darvas trained as an economist at the University of Budapest. Reluctant to remain in Hungary until either the Nazis or the Soviets took over, he fled at the age of 23 with a forged exit visa and 50 pounds sterling to stave off hunger in Istanbul, Turkey. During his off hours, he read some 200 books on the market and speculators, studying as much as eight hours a day. Darvas invested his money into some of stocks that had been hitting their 52-week high. He was surprised that the stocks continued to rise and subsequently sold them to make a large profit.

First published in 1936, Keynes’ ideas had evolved during the difficulties following World War 1 in Europe, and the US crash and the Depression of the 1920s-'30s and the misery of mass unemployment. He deplored the situation where a few individuals or companies stored massive wealth while vast numbers experienced poverty and insecurity (his alarm bells ring today!) and sought to promote initiatives where governments could intervene with social projects to keep money fluctuating.

An entertaining and easy-to-listen audiobook about a practical blueprint to simplify Canada's horribly frustratingly overly complicated tax system. The author shares his frustration with a wildly inefficient, impossibly complex, and heartlessly impersonal bureaucracy that routinely ensares honest, hard-working people in its labyrinthine maze. The Grumpy Accountant tells the story of Jerry, a typical Canadian, and George, his trusted grumpy accountant, who guides him through the tax system at every stage in life.

The audio needs work. Most of the time, Peter Lynch speaks clearly and is easy to listen to. But he has a mumble streak and tends to quietly pronounce certain words. I find myself hitting rewind and lowering the speed to try to figure out what word he used. It's an ongoing process.
Great book, audiobook needs better enunciation.
