Publisher's Summary

Alan Arkin, one of the most beloved and accomplished actors of our time, reveals a side of himself not often shown on stage or screen.

Like many teenagers, 16-year-old Alan Arkin had it all figured out. Then came young adulthood, and with it a wave of doubt so strong it caused him to question everything he thought he knew about himself and the world. Ever skeptical and full of questions, Arkin embarked on a spiritual journey to find something—anything—to believe in. An existential crisis in his 30s led him to the study of Eastern philosophy. Soon he began opening himself to the possibility that there was more to life than what he had simply seen, heard, or been taught.

In this Audible Original "mini-memoir," the 84-year-old actor shares his powerful spiritual experiences, from his brush with reincarnation to the benefits of meditation. In a gruff, earthy voice that sounds more suited to a New York cabbie than a spiritual guide, he shows us that wisdom can come from the most unexpected places and teachers. Out of My Mind is a candid, relatable, and delightfully irreverent take on how one man went searching for meaning and ended up discovering himself.

What the critics say

"[W]ow is he a great storyteller. His voice is hypnotic - but not put-you-to-sleep hypnotic, but like a guided concentration. Which is apropos, as he devotes much of this shorter audiobook to his evolving spirituality and his current meditation habit.... He owns listeners' attention with his confident timbre, his New York accent and, most important, the power of his stories." (The New York Times Book Review)

A brilliant authentic man and his story.

I will return to this book again soon, in case something was missed. Who is this guy? so much more than just an actor.

What a companion

On a six hour drive I had the opportunity to hear Alan read this entire book. What great company. And what timely information and inspiration as I am just over halfway through an 11 week training in mindfulness meditation. I feel like his story aided and abetted my understanding of my life’s evolution in becoming here and now. And pointed out some future directions and perspectives that will continue to help me in my journey. Thank you Alan!

Ron James Ramblesi

I loved this timely Audible of Canadian comedienne Ron James who gives many of us an idea of the provinces in the Prairies and Maritimes. there were no slow parts, as all chapters were both funny and informative. There some sad parts as well.

Well done Ron and thank you for this very well read book. I went to several of your Toronto TV tapings and was very sad when CBC stopped airing your show.

I think giving us more of your great writings and well read books relating to Canada felt as if I was at one of your tapings listening to your great travels.

I will definitely listen your book several times over this coming winter.
