Story
Like millions of her millennial peers, Rachel Held Evans didn't want to go to church anymore. The hypocrisy, the politics, the gargantuan building budgets, the scandals - church culture seemed so far removed from Jesus. Yet despite her cynicism and misgivings, something kept drawing her back. And so she set out on a journey to understand the Church and to find her place in it.

Story
If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her—and it will change you too.
Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.

Story
From New York Times best-selling author Rachel Held Evans: a must-listen for anyone on the journey of doubt, deconstruction, and ultimately faith reborn. Eighty years after the Scopes Monkey Trial made a spectacle of Christian fundamentalism and brought national attention to her hometown, Rachel Held Evans faced a trial of her own when she began to have doubts about her faith. Rachel recounts growing up in a culture obsessed with apologetics, struggling as her own faith unraveled one unexpected question at a time.

Story
Sarah Bessey was in her sweet spot: a popular author, sought-after speaker and preacher, and an active and engaged mother of four, married to the love of her life. Raised within the Word of Faith and prosperity movements, which declared that obedience to God led to untold blessings, her life seemed to prove the preachers of her childhood were right. Then she was in a car accident with life-shattering consequences, and everything she thought she knew about God and faith was upended. Sarah tells us the whole story of the car accident that changed her body and changed her life.

Story
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Moving us beyond the damaging idea that “being right” is the most important measure of faith, Enns’ freeing approach to Bible study helps us to instead focus on pursuing enlightenment and building our relationship with God - which is exactly what the Bible was designed to do.

McLaren, a former pastor and now an author, speaker, and activist, shows how old assumptions are being challenged in nearly every area of human life, not just theology and spirituality.

Story
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Publisher's Summary
In Out of Sorts, Sarah Bessey, award-winning blogger and author of Jesus Feminist, helps us grapple with core Christian issues using a mixture of beautiful storytelling and biblical teaching. As she candidly shares her wrestlings with core issues - such as who Jesus is, what place the church has in our lives, how to disagree yet remain within a community, and how to love the Bible for what it is rather than what we want it to be - she teaches us how to walk courageously through our own tough questions. In the process of gently helping us sort things out, Bessey teaches us how to be as comfortable with uncertainty as we are with solid answers. And as we learn to hold questions in one hand and answers in the other, we discover new depths of faith that will remain secure even through the storms of life.

Sounded like a robot reading this!
Would you try another book from Sarah Bessey and/or Joell A. Jacob?
I am beyond disappointed in this experiencing. I could barely get past the foreword because of the automated sound of the reader. She sounds like those cartoons with the female robot voice. Or it's like being read to by Siri. I was SOOO looking forward to this book, but I will have to buy the book and read it myself, because listening to this was unbearable. I hate writing such a negative review, but seriously y'all, this was BEYOND bad.
What other book might you compare Out of Sorts to and why?
I don't know.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joell A. Jacob?
Anyone. Literally, anyone would have to have been better.
Did Out of Sorts inspire you to do anything?
Write this review and wish I could get my money back...

Terrible audio
I could even listen to 10 minutes of this book before I stopped and exchanged it. It sounds like it's being read by a 90's robot. It's impossible to listen to and enjoy. I love listening to Sarah on podcasts, I wish she would do the audio for her own books.

My heart and mind
My heart resonated with Sarah Bessey’s words. I’ve been sorting my faith for several years...and yet with all the problems I am having with evangelicalism these days, my mantra remains”stay.”
Sarah is an old soul. If you a Boomer that grew up in the Jesus movement of the 60’s and 70’s you will get her!

Is Siri reading this book?!
The story itself is wonderful. Sarah Bessey is one of my favorite authors. But about 10 minutes into this book I had to turn it off and buy the printed copy on Amazon. The narrator sounds like a robot and the inflection and timing is way off. It was so distracting I had to stop listening. I'm so disappointed.

Beautiful, Encouraging Book
I absolutely loved this book from the very first sentence: "Once upon a time you had it all beautifully sorted out. Then you didn't."
I just finished reading Out of Sorts and I already want to read it again and soak it in deep. Sarah's words are so encouraging and her love for Jesus is contagious. I see myself in so much of her story, though we are from different denominational backgrounds. Sarah reminds us that it is okay to have questions and doubts and experience a bit of wilderness time. And she is so gracious in her writing about how we all need each other, all the various streams of Christianity. I love her vulnerability and honesty and the prayer at the end of the book nearly had me in tears. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You will be blessed!
