Publisher's Summary

Sex is at the core of our identities. And when it becomes a compulsion, it can unravel our lives. Out of the Shadows is the premier work on this disorder, written by a pioneer in its treatment. Revised and updated to include the latest research - and to address the exploding phenomenon of cybersex addiction - this third edition identifies the danger signs, explains the dynamics, and describes the consequences of sexual addiction and dependency. With practical wisdom and spiritual clarity, it points the way out of the shadows of sexual compulsion and back into the light and fullness of life.

Not for every sex addict

The book is more focused on describing a vast variety of sex additions than helping you with a game plan. It helped me to not feel alone in my addiction. But doesn't help me to built a way out of the addiction. It mostly helps you to be aware of how deep into the hole some people go. It has very nasty stories Keep in mind it's tough and painful to hear.

Very Extreme

This is a good book. I have struggled with fetishes and porn and wanted help. The issue is while I felt like I couldn't relate to other books wherein the person struggled with masturbating once per week (seemed minor compared to my problems) I found I couldn't relate to this book for the exact opposite reason. The examples and illustrations are oriented for the extremely advanced sex addict. This book is geared towards not just child molesters and rapists but to those who do it non stop for years. This book contains the stuff nightmares are made of. Don't even think about it if you have a weak stomach.

expertly explains sex addiction

I am so glad I bought this book because it is giving me so much Insight on my husband's disease and how I contribute to it also how I'm codependent. I remember listening to one of the chapters and I just ended up bawling crying because of all the compassion I felt for my husband and his struggle. this book has been a turning point for me

WOW!

One line in this book that shifted everything I thought I knew...

“Men objectify women because it is easier to be rejected by an object than by a person.”

Content was disturbing

This book likely presents sex addiction in true light, but the content was too disturbing for me and sometimes caused too many graphic images. I chose to stop listening after a few chapters and thought that this book may be triggering for a sex addict.

Too graphic, not practical

I read this book to better help others with addictions. however the book goes into so much detail with events like rape and incest, it disgust me. You can learn about addiction without that

Out of the shadows

A rehash of AA Big Book.
Fails to recognize any gradient in conditions
The man that looks at nude pictures once every three years is lumped in with the guy who has sex with animals
Great fodder for therapist to layout a long and costly treatment regime
