Publisher's Summary

A weight-losing recipe sends a portly Victorian housemaid literally sky-high. Mrs Next-Door, the queen of copycats, drives her patient neighbour mad with rage; the tragic tale of the ghost of Fairacre; the touch-and-go romance of Elsie Parker.

In Over the Gate, Miss Read, the village schoolmistress, continues to remember odd incidents and excellent stories and to retell them with characteristic grace and compassion.

Fairacre Fables

A series of mostly unconnected stories about village people, or those who might pass through Fairacre. Very enjoyable, some are quite fanciful, but not my favourite in the series. So far that’s Miss Clare Remembers. I felt as though Miss Read held us at a distance all through this series of stories, and there was little development of the main characters whom we have come to care about in earlier books. All the same well worth a listen.
Excellent narration!
