Overture to Death includes all the basics of the country estate mysteries: the squire, the heir, the rector, the country doctor, etc. Despite an incredibly old fashioned attitude towards ’spinsters’, it has a wonderful cast of complex and interesting characters and a murder that’s bound to keep readers guessing.

Ngaio Marsh’s detective is my favourite from the golden age of mysteries.
