The concept was good and it kept me interested throughout the book. The writing though was just ok.

I suspect author A.P. Gore is autistic (or co-author Patricia Jones is collaboratively over-punctilious). This book is often so hyper-focused on tiny details that the overall plot seems like nothing more than a matrix for exploring game mechanics and magic systems. Hour after hour is spent reviewing character sheets and methods to infuse 'Spirit' & 'Mana' into crops to make them grow faster and of higher quality. I found the story - heavy on betrayal, alliance, and legal contracts - overall uninteresting. Factoring in an awkward text (sometimes-loaded-with-F-bombs/sometimes-G-rated) and I was left disappointed.

Easily the best feature of the audiobook is the narration by Eric Michael Summerer. He somehow even manages to make the endless stat readings emotive. If you are given the option between a text copy of the book or this recorded version, choose this one seven days a week (I don't usually advise that with LitRPG).

Altogether, 'Path Of Darkness: Blackflame Online Universe Series. Glory of Formation Emperor, Book 1' is a relatively boring 4/10 star GameLit. Even as a 'Plus' selection, it was a bit of a navel-gazing character-planning & grinding chore. When it leaves the "included with your subscription" menu, avoid.

[Note: the climactic battle is tremendous - still not good enough to make up for the deficiencies - but well-choreographed and full of surprises & clever tactical moves]
