À propos de cet audio

A magnificent epic set against a history of seven thousand years of the struggles of Gods and Kings and men—of strange lands and events—of fate and a prophecy that must be fulfilled!

THE BELGARIAD

Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.

But that was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the dark man without a shadow had haunted him for years.

Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved—but did not know?

For a while his dreams of innocence were safe, untroubled by knowledge of his strange heritage. For a little while . . .

I read The Belgariad many years ago and loved it, so I decided to listen to Audible's version of the audiobooks. The problem with fantasy books is that names of people, places, and things are often unfamiliar, so how each person interprets the pronunciation is different. There were a few things that I would have pronounced differently, but for the most part, I thought Brian Wiggins nailed it. The accents were definitely a bit theatrical, but for me, the accents and the variation in voices for each character really brought the story to life. I purchased the whole series, and enjoyed the narration for every book. I'm really disappointed that they didn't choose have Brian Wiggins narrate the follow up series, The Mallorean. I'm listening to the first book in that series right now, and in my opinion, the narrator cannot hold a candle to Brian Wiggins's performance.

Love This Series

The ready was great with the voice overs and story telling.
Can’t wait to listen to the next book

I have to give this book 5 Stars all round. Have owned for many years.

An excellent read

tried another old favorite and had to stop due to the reader's interpretation of Polgara. Although sharp and irritated as a protective shield of her character, she should not be portrayed as mean or shallow. The reader lost her strength and power and did not reflect the depth of her character.
- there's strong racial stereotypes used for the characters, exacerbated by the readers use of cultural accents instead of just different voices
- reading is also weirdly childlike storytelling with exaggerated words
- apart from the dated stereotypical characters, the story and character development is great.

had to stop listening

As always David Eddings has amazing stories. I'm not a fan of the narration for this. The attempt at voices for the characters detracted a lot from the story. In places it seemed almost childish.

Amazing story, not a fan of the narration

I was hoping it would be a little bit more. Seem to be more TeenLit

I don’t understand why the person who directed this would allow the reader to find the most obnoxious ways to pronounce names possible. Almost everything is second syllable heavy. Bahr -AHK for example. Grolim is another one. I would expect Grah-lum, but instead got Grah-LEEM.

There are dozen more examples that I won’t get into.

Also, add in the fact that some of these characters have outrageously bad accents. Silk, for example, sounds like an exaggerated Russian accent similar to John Malkovich in rounders.

There are 10 books combined in this series and the Mallorean (don’t get me started on Mah-lore-EE-ah)

I had purchased three before listening as I was wrapping up another novel. I would not suggest buying this copy.

Accents and pronunciation plague what is a good story
