Publisher's Summary

"Narrator Susan Ericksen's performance vibrates with energy as she portrays old and new characters in this series."—AudioFile on Desperation in Death, an Earphones Award winner.

A retired colleague falls victim to a staged suicide in Payback in Death, the next police thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note—Eve's gut says it's a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback—and she will not rest until the case is closed.

Worth listening to

Some parts seemed to drag a bit but the narrator and the story were good.

Excellent, as usual

Another cliffhanger by Ms Roberts. Made even better by Susan Erickson and her storytelling excellence. Looking very forward to the next one.

definitely a must read!

I was so very surprised by this book. Thank you. Finally, a murdered mystery, that was faster paced and not about police procedure. You were taken along for the ride. With the focus on the detective, it was well written..

There was romance, but it wasn't distracting, it complimented the story. The best part is that even though this is not the first book in this series, i wasn't lost. I didn't need to read the previous books in order to listen to this book and understand the relationships between the characters. I didn't have to have previous knowledge of any of the characters, everything just blended. There were funny parts. I loved her quirky personality. I love her partner's personality, her husband's personality.

The narrator ...wow, fantastic! the Irish accent, just the different characters. It was almost like it was read by more than one person. Fantastic book

Need a new narrator

The story was engaging but I cringed at the narration. Susan Erikson makes Peabody sound like a “country bumpkin” and Eve Dallas surprised by everything she says. I’ll be back to reading this series on paper as I can’t take the narration

Just words

Not allot of story, just words. Could have been so much better.
Disappointing.

To the narrator, quit with the accents.

Great story & listen

Yes, another great story by JD!
Lots of twists & turns in the investigation plus the human side of all the relationships within Dallas’ inner circle.
Susan Erickson is an outstanding narrator! Susan uses inflections, softness & compassion, as well as the hard & stern. She’s very adept at keeping the character voices consistent.

Really enjoyed!

I think it was well written and made you think as so many characters could have “done it”! An enjoyable read and I have to say I also love Susan Erikson’s narration!

No notes.

When you get to this point in a series, the inside jokes and relational nuances are so familiar it feels like these characters are friends. Exactly what I wanted from this book.

LOVE THESE BOOKS! ❤️ 😍 💖

I started these booked 11, maybe 12 years ago...
They just get better, but unfortunately, they adre further apart these days. I hope I get them all read before I die...
They use to come out 3 or 4 a tear. Now I'm lucky if there are 1 or close to 2 a year.
Just please keep them coming,..

Robb delivers again.

I have all the "In Death" books, some in both written and audio formats. Robb frequently refers to a previous investigation in later books. I'm disappointed that there has been no follow-up to "Forgotten in Death". In that book several people asked about the young woman's family. I'd like to know if any of her family had been located and notified.

"Payback" has an interesting plot and is void of gory violence. I actually laughed out loud at several humorous conversations. I enjoy the continued character development not only of people within NYPSD, but also Eve's friends and Roarke's family. It's good to see Peabody get more respect as her detective skills grow. But it's time for her to have access to Eve's coffee without groveling.

I want a droid to help around the house and might enjoy having an auto chef.

Peabody has teeth!

Great storyline.
Superb narration by Susan Erickson with so many distinct characters. So nice to visit them all again.
Favorite parts were the vacation time in Ireland, Peabody with blocker, Webster, house project updates, and wow... Peabody gets a little scary.
The poof button debate is hilarious.

I’m getting bored

I love Dallas and company, but Dallas’ performance is so predictable. She has the same intonation over and over with hardly any changes. Maybe it’s just me.

Loves the tangled web and the options of culprits.

Liked the whole story- the continuity of character storylines from before - Peabody and McNab etc…. I was a bit confused that she never circled back with Nadine - she always seems to circle back ..

Boring

Story lacks excitement, boring plot. Not sure series is still viable as the story lines have sluggish momentum.
