Publisher's Summary

The incredible true story of former Navy SEAL Mike Day, who survived being shot 27 times while deployed in Iraq.

On the night of April 6, 2007, in Iraq's Anbar Province, Senior Chief Mike Day, his team of Navy SEALs, and a group of Iraqi scouts were on the hunt for a high-level al-Qaeda cell. Day was the first to enter a 12x12 room where four terrorist leaders were waiting in ambush. When the gunfight was over, he took out all four terrorists in the room, but not before being shot 27 times and hit with grenade shrapnel.

Miraculously, Day cleared the rest of the house and rescued six women and children before walking out on his own to an awaiting helicopter, which flew him to safety.

While in the hospital, the Navy SEAL lost 55 pounds in two weeks. It took almost two years for Day to physically recover from his injuries, although he still deals with pain. Like so many veterans, doctors diagnosed Day with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury - the invisible wounds of war.

Perfectly Wounded is the remarkable story of an American hero whose incredible survival defies explanation and whose blessed life of service continues in the face of unimaginable odds.

What the critics say

"Inspiring.... Readers interested in care programs for returning veterans will find Day's account invaluable." (Kirkus, starred review)

"A memoir that goes beyond war - one that shares a story of awe-inspiring resiliency, courage, healing, and love on a thousand levels." (Major Scott A. Huesing, USMC (ret.), best-selling author of Echo in Ramadi)

"Mike Day is the living embodiment of the American fighting spirit, a true warrior who exemplifies intestinal fortitude, drive, and compassion. This book is a genuine display of the kind of 'never quit, no matter the odds' attitude that simply cannot be taught. PERFECTLY WOUNDED is the story of an American hero who always stayed in the fight, no matter what was thrown at him." (D. McBurnett, US Navy SEAL (ret.), author of Uncommon Grit: A Photographic Journey Through Navy SEAL Training)

Perfectly written...

I wouldn’t want to hear Chief Day read another book, but I wouldn’t want anyone else to read this book! There is something about someone telling his own story that conveys on a deeper level. From cracking himself up, to his voice cracking with emotion, the impact was heard and felt. When I say perfectly written, I don’t necessarily mean a literary work of art or genius... It’s that you get a clear view of Mike’s personality and outlook that comes across as absolutely authentic; he is very open and honest about what goes on in his mind. I’ve never been shot or in combat but I could relate to so much he said. He could have easily written this as the hero archetype, making himself 10 foot tall and (literally) bulletproof. Instead he plays down his accomplishments and seems the most excited when offering healing solutions that may possibly benefit others. If you’ve bought this book then I’m sure you know the backstory, I’ll not repeat it. But the most impressive thing to me is not that Mike’s heart was still beating after being shot 27 times, but that his heart still beats to help and serve others. God bless you, sir.

Not bad

Similar to most SEAL books I have read. These Gents are amazing. I liked hearing the early years. Looking for “more” of why they decided to be the elite and not about BUDS. Suggest a collective account of SEALs. Jocko, Marcus, Mike, The Admiral, etc. my 2 cents. Most of all Thank you for what you did and do.

Excellent Life Lessons Book

Not what I expected..... much better. I like the fact that Mike read it and some smooth talkin’ narrator. Battle content and stories were amazing, what I had hoped for. I was NOT, however, expecting the deeper side of this book. It has helped and inspired me. What a twist on what my mind was prepared for. Thanks to Mike for telling the truth. For letting everyone ’inside the circle’. Perhaps I don’t truly need my circle as small as it has become. Thank you, sir. God Bless you and your family

Great story

At first I didn't love the narration... it made me feel like a jerk but I didn't enjoy it. His speech was a little too fast. I ended up slowing down the playback to 90% and that made it much better. There are definitely parts of the story that are more meaningful because it's Day recounting the events himself. Absolutely a great story!

Great read.!

Just want to thank Mike for writing this book. I know it must have been difficult but, worth the struggles writing it. He shares with a never quit attitude and excepting help from others we can and do recover.

Great story, great narration

Mike Day's story is a phenomenal one. I was expecting more of an anecdotal book with simple war stories. However, Mike offers sound advice, relayed and learned through personal experience. Really appreciated his own narration and the times when he would break out laughing or start to get emotional. Positively enhanced the consumption experience. I would recommend this book to others.
