Publisher's Summary

A stunning portrait of the magnificent splendor and enduring legacy of ancient Persia

The Achaemenid Persian kings ruled over the largest empire of antiquity, stretching from Libya to the steppes of Asia and from Ethiopia to Pakistan. From the palace-city of Persepolis, Cyrus the Great, Darius, Xerxes, and their heirs reigned supreme for centuries until the conquests of Alexander of Macedon brought the empire to a swift and unexpected end in the late 330s BCE.

In Persians, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the epic story of this dynasty and the world it ruled. Drawing on Iranian inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, art, and archaeology, he shows how the Achaemenid Persian Empire was the world’s first superpower—one built, despite its imperial ambition, on cooperation and tolerance. This is the definitive history of the Achaemenid dynasty and its legacies in modern-day Iran, a book that completely reshapes our understanding of the ancient world.

What the critics say

“There is a long legacy of misinformation around ancient Persian empires, the lives of its leaders, and greater Persian society. However, by examining the artifacts and monuments that remain, historian Llewellyn-Jones brings forth a view of ancient Persia that is rich in tradition and historical significance.”—Library Journal
“Immersive… Llewellyn-Jones expertly illuminates the decentralized, multicultural nature of the Achaemenid empire and offers valuable perspective on the modern Middle East, where the great kings of ancient Persia still feature in Iran’s national self-image. This is a valuable contribution to the understanding of ‘history’s first great superpower.’—Publishers Marketplace
“This is an engaging, pacy account of the Persian Empire which is based on a rich range of sources. Going right up to the use of Cyrus the Great in modern Iran, the ‘Persian Version’ on which Professor Lloyd-Jones focuses has much to tell us about how different cultures create history and use it to tell their stories.”—Helen King, professor emerita, Classical Studies, The Open University

Best Book Written About Persian Empire (Iran)

This is easily the best book written about the Persian Empire.
It had details that I had never heard ANYWHERE,

Now, after Messi won the World cup, the only other thing I need in life is Lioyd writing a Book about Ashkanians & then another one about Sassanians so it becomes a trilogy. there are zero books about those two on Audible.

Because I love the way he cuts deep into history year by year and presents his own comments AND all the other thesis about the matter.

The only part he missed was about the Shah (Ariamehr), in which he mentioned he's not charismatic and the 1979 Islamic revolution reasons, I think 1979 and what followed was the last cry for Islam in Iran not the new dawn, I think it was already on it's way out and mullas/Muslim Iranians had to do something before it's too late, not understanding this part is totally ok and understandable for a none Iranian. currently (2022) the last shah is extremely popular in Iran and is seen as a prophet figure. they use part of his speeches on their TikTok videos and is kinda a father figure for the gen z & millennials,

Good History and Historiography

Good counter to the multiple Histories on Classical Greece.
It’s hard to see the Persians when most of our sources on them are Greek.
This book attempts to amend that. The author is clearly passionate about the topic and this shows in his book.
I wanted a good book on the Persian Empire in Audible format and that is what this book is.

Disappointing

I was really looking forward to this listen. An 18 hour scholarly exposition of the Achaemenid empire! An illuminating exploration of this extremely interesting period in history. Instead, I gave up after a few hours. The Introduction is for some reason a rant about out the Greeks and British imperialist have ruined the history of this period. Then a statement of how this book is instead going to be an informed exposition based on the real, Persian sources (Great!). Instead the actual chapters are either those same Greek sources or stuff he is just making up! He knows what Mandane told to Cyrus and how Cyrus received the information????! He knows how Cyrus felt looking out at his garden? When it comes to interpretation, he is at best a 2nd-rate mind (and often contradicts himself within a page or two-Persian history did not have dynastic disputes which is why it didn't decay and fall. Ugh-Cambyses/Bardiya to Darius was not a dynastic dispute?) The strength of the empire was that it was I, Claudius told 500 years earlier? I was hoping at least to get a detailed narrative of facts and sources despite the interpretation but there is just too much of the later (and the imagining of what went on in the mind of the characters) to make this worthwhile. On a postive note, I really did like hearing the pronunciation of all of the Persian names.

A blissful, white-washed history of Persia

The author makes no pretense of presenting an objective history. Any comparisons with other empires or cultures are flawed and based on a unsophisticated, stereotypical, pejorative view of those cultures.

Some chapters are really good, but any time the author returns to his pro-Persian, anti-Western themes, he undermines those.

So enlightening!

As a history teacher, who delivers a large unit about the golden age of Greece, this book proved incredibly valuable. I have always taught the history of the Greeks without giving sufficient due to the Persian empire because I simply have not had enough exposure to the subject. In the case of this book, I find a treasure trove of tantalizing facts and stories that have already enhanced my unit on the Greeks. There is also much thought-provoking perspective delivered by the author, which will continue to shape my curriculum in coming years as I revisit this work, and further explore ancient Iran.

Well-performed historical account

So interesting as history, balances the Greek-oriented ancient history I’d learned before, and brings lots of human details into the narrative of political and military events. Also, the author does a great job of reading his book with nuance and variety.

Great narrative

Informative, interesting and enlightening. As an Archaeologist researching the time period, found this writing informative, fascinating and understandable. Well worth the read.

Even better than Persian Fire

Great book, clear, concise, and detailed without losing the plot. I dont agree with reviews saying this is a whitewashed history, this is very much not an orientalist narrative.

Ride swiftly, let your arrows fly true, and believe not the lie.
