Play It Away
Publisher's Summary
Do you live in constant fear? Do you worry that something terrible is about to happen? Do you have trouble breathing, relaxing, and sleeping? Do you think you're losing control, and that you're going to die?
Are you trapped in your own personal hell, and don’t know how to get out?
I've been there, and I know what it’s like. Shallow breathing, tension in the gut, chest pains, rapid heartbeat... Every moment is exhausting, crushing, and painful. Anxiety destroys your confidence, your productivity, your relationships, and your ability to enjoy life. The worst part is the obsessive hopelessness - the gnawing sense that you’ll never feel happy again.
Fear no more. You can put an end to your suffering. You can start living again. And it’s not as hard as you think....
Play It Away covers my entire journey: what caused my anxiety, the "A-ha!" moment that led to my cure, and how I got my life back. In this book, you’ll learn:
- The key breakthrough that allowed me to enjoy life again
- My step-by-step plan for healing anxiety without drugs
- How I turned nonstop worrying into background noise
- My unusual technique for stopping panic attacks
- Why "anchors" fuel anxiety, and how to remove them
- How I finally started sleeping well again
- Three common nutrient deficiencies that amplify anxiety
- How to boost productivity and have guilt-free fun

The first workaholic book I've read, and holy sh*t
As a physician working with dying patients, I sometimes get stressed out, anxious, etc. But my bigger reason for reading this book was knowing that I'm a workaholic. I've never read a book by workaholic, about workaholism, etc. This just floored me. Maybe more a reflection of my lack of exposure to literature on the topic then on the groundbreaking nature of the book, but I was still blown away. I'm no stranger to self-help literature having read probably more than 100 books in the genre, which was one of the reasons I put off reading this book for so long. I did not expect to find anything new in it. To be fair, there are some classic suggestions in here that were not new, but the premise of the book "go play" was presented an engaging and convincing way and the action items were clear and straightforward. It's only 2 1/2 hours, but I stopped and bookmarked at least five different spots in the book and said out loud "holy shit, this is me, I need to do __suggestion from the book___".

Shallow Tips and Tricks
What disappointed you about Play It Away?
This book does not have any depth. The author gives little tips and tricks that helped him solve his anxiety problems. These worked for him, so he says, but they did not work for me.
What could Charlie Hoehn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Help solve the problem of worry and anxiety instead of citing interesting apps and TV shows that he enjoys.
What didn’t you like about Ray Chase’s performance?
He did a good job.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Play It Away?
Most of it because I found his app recommendation and tips and tricks useless.
The book is only 3 hours long and can be boiled down to two things:
1.) Relax
2.) Get enough sleep
Any additional comments?
Give me my credit back!

easy read
This book offers good insight into what makes us anxious and how we can be free from it. Common sense writing with a Tim Ferris feel to it. I enjoyed this book.
