Liked the first book well enough. But the psychological trauma to the main character and absolutely vile characters and situations he has to go through just turned my stomach. Worst part is that these things are likely happening somewhere in real life right now. This isn’t some call to action with some suggested way for me to help. This is fiction that I am listening to for enjoyment. But I take no joy in the extreme dark sides of human nature that can traumatize people for life.

I’ll not be continuing the series.

The story's main drive, the MC's desire to reach the top, is hard to sympathize with. He is postured as an impoverished person, but it's all so far in the past it seems like it's added post-hoc to justify his actions. I was hoping to see growth in the second book, but having gotten through the second I don't know if I see that happening. We haven't really seen any of the suffering caused by his socioeconomic status, outside of a few flashbacks that feel hard to connect with. He's constantly being a right bastard for the sake of money, talking about how he wants his family to have a good life, but we haven't seen his family suffer throughout the whole story, and if it were to be added later into the story it would feel very insincere to me as a reader at this point. Deciding to have him be a successful military officer that stopped without presenting that also adds less credibility to the crux of the MC's justification for most of his actions, leading to a character who simply seems entitled and edgy for the sake of it.

From the 1st sentence of the chapter, it was clear the the voice acting was overwhelmingly disturbing. But I tried to give it a chance. However, the story was so senseless and empty that I felt like burning my headphones just to get away from the nonsense being pumped into my ears.
