À propos de cet audio

Riding high after successfully defending his home country, Calvin is assigned as Kala's bodyguard on a diplomatic mission to Uleis, a merchant nation with whom a deal must be struck to ensure Gadvera's continued survival.

But Uleis is run by a secretive cabal of powerful cultists, and when Calvin crosses them in typical Calvinian fashion, they do to him the same thing they do to all their problems: toss him in a hole from which there is no return.

Story:
this book has gone to a different direction - MC spent most of the book scheming in a foreign court. While still brilliant, it's a different kind compared to what he showed in book 1 and I do not like that at all. Also there are a lot more time spent on other people's PoV taking focus away from the MC.

Performance:
as good as book 1

too much politics

The characters in this story follow choices that feel like they fit their personalities, rather than what is strictly the most optimal.

even better than the first book. a very enjoyable adventure with a protagonist that doesn't take anything too seriously.

it's very fun

This book is a solid sequel to the first. It's got magic, it's got a harem of girls who are increasingly throwing caution (and their clothes) to the wind, it's got humour, and it's got cheats that are progressively getting more powerful without totally breaking the system. All of that is great, and it's what made me come back for more.

But it also committed a cardinal sin: it made the main character unlikable. While he's not a bad person most of the time, there was one scene in which he casually decided to torture someone to break them. It's explained away as a necessary fiction, but... it didn't sit right. There was no soul searching, no deliberation about it. It was necessary, so he threatened to do horrific things. It made me stop listening a few hours in to the book.

I want to hear more about the plot. The background of the world is fascinating, and we're hearing more about the main character's not-so-silent partner - but is it worth it? I'm on the fence. If you don't mind shades of grey, you'll probably love this.

Probably not going to keep reading
