Publisher's Summary

Georgia O'Keeffe, one of the most original painters America has ever produced, left behind a remarkable legacy when she died at the age of 98. Her vivid visual vocabulary, sensuous flowers, bleached bones against red sky and earth, had a stunning, profound, and lasting influence on American art in this century.

O'Keeffe's personal mystique is as intriguing and enduring as her bold, brilliant canvasses. Here is the first full account of her exceptional life, from her girlhood and early days as a controversial art teacher to her discovery by the pioneering photographer of the New York avant-garde, Alfred Stieglitz, to her seclusion in the New Mexico desert, where she lived until her death.

And here is the story of a great romance between the extraordinary painter and her much older mentor, lover, and husband, Alfred Stieglitz.

Renowned for her fierce independence, iron determination, and unique artistic vision, Georgia O'Keeffe is a 20th century legend. Her dazzling career spans virtually the entire history of modern art in America.

Fascinating Artist

Extremely detailed account of Georgia Totto O'Keeffe’s life. I enjoyed many of the interactions and relationships that aided or interfered with O’Keeffe’s drive to paint. The prose was often fun to hear and I especially enjoyed learning about her quirky nature. Her life spanned an era that is hard to imagine against today’s digital world, with letter writing so valued and necessary then. Did people really consider the shapes of other’s lips and bone structure as much as was mentioned? Did people take the time to consider context and character after words were uttered, and temper their meaning based on this analysis? There were many times I wondered about how the times and the artist were represented and how these could be verified. Overall I enjoyed the book and may listen to parts of it again.

Rich descriptions and details

I was impressed with the rich descriptions and details of her life. Her dedication to her art was astounding and her unyielding personality, intelligence and independence made her a force of nature. I learned a new and deep appreciation for her as a woman and an artist. The narration eventually grew on me, as it was very matter of fact - but I think it represented this biography very well.
