The narrator.....

Buddy pauses after every sentence for 5 seconds and its driving me mad. I guess I am just spoiled by all the Michael Kramer narrations I have listened too.

...Dramatic Pause

... Dramatic pause... between... each line... could have been shortened.... to a third its length.

Great story though.

the main character ruins it.

the main character is a worthless human being in every regard. wish I never picked this up. biggest mystery is how this book is so popular. no loyalty to ppl who deserve it but seeks acceptance from the most pitifull ppl like his father.

Terrible

Maybe the story is great - I dunno. I couldn't tell because the narrator was so bad! I listened to 3 chapters and stopped. There are pauses in the speaking so long that you don't know if the sentence is over or if the chapter is over, but then relize neither are over and he hasn't finished the sentence yet! Brutal!

Brilliant writing and narration

I understand this book won’t suit everyone as it is quite dark and cynical, as well as deep and intelligent. But I loved it very very very much. The narrator just absolutely nails it. I couldn’t imagine anyone doing a better job of Jorg than James Clamp did here.
Discovering this book yielded many rewards for me. Not only the Broken Empire series itself, but also Lawrence’s other works, the Tower of Babel series (absolutely incredible), as well as several other books that Mark Lawrence recommended. I’m so glad I stumbled upon this book!

Not a bad start

Not a happy tale but good characters and story. The motivations of characters are more realistic than the average fantasy novel.

Despite the reviews Narrator Warnings

Despite the reviews warning of the narrator I gave it a try . Then another try and finally a last try. The pause doesn't really get that bad until a couple hours in and then its just painful listening. I could have gotten past the lack of difference between character voices but the pause kills it for me .

Too many pauses

I know it’s been mentioned before but I wanted to try it for myself… turns out it’s all true, the narrator takes massive pauses at the end of sentences and sometimes mid sentence.

Apologies to the narrator, but it’s just not something that I can listen to.

Good Story, Bad Production

had to listen on 1.2x speed due to the gawd-awful narration / direction. significant pauses after punctuation, especially with dialogue. unbearable to listen to at regular speed. enjoyed the story though. I'd read this first book before so ill continue with the sequels.

I don’t think y’all get it

I understand other reviews are criticizing the narration and the protagonist. I get that some people might not like the narrater but I personally love him. What I don’t get is people criticizing the protagonist for being so “evil”. That’s kinda the point of the first book guys he had an extremely hard upbringing and FINISH THE STORY and you will understand more the reasoning behind his actions. Also I think the trope of having the protagonist always being a virtuous goody two shoes is somewhat overused in fiction not that stories with good protagonist aren’t good because obviously they are but you can’t really be criticizing the book for having a protagonist with bad morals when that is one of the main plot points of the book. To everyone bashing the book I think you need to just finish the series. And I recommend to anyone going through these reviews listen to the book and form your own opinion. (Also I literally did not notice the narrator pauses until reading the other reviews)
