Publisher's Summary

RITA Award Winner, Best Contemporary Single Title, 1994

This deliciously scandalous novel tells us the secrets of the reigning queens of television talk shows, Deanna Reynolds and Angela Perkins.

Their high-staked rivalry, fought with public smiles and private betrayals, is more than a ratings competition. It becomes an off-screen war when Deanna replaces Angela both on the air and behind the scenes with Angela's former lover after Angela moves to the big time in New York.

Angela's anger at her former protégé escalates from bitterness to vengeance. And an anonymous fan's admiration crosses the line into obsession. Only one woman will emerge with her life in this battle of ego and passion.

Pretty good

I enjoy the story, it's one of my favorite older Nora Roberts titles. I also think the narrator has a very nice reading voice. I wish the character voices had been more consistent, or not attempted at all. But pretty good overall.

Slow start but overall worthwhile

It’s slow to get going but the story picks up and is quite good: great characters, twists and turns, a little mystery. That said, despite a lovely speaking voice, the narrator is very distracting with terrible pronunciation and strange inflections that, timed poorly, do affect the story at times.

Poor Narration

Would you consider the audio edition of Private Scandals to be better than the print version?

No. The narrator simply reads the book instead of reading a story.

What other book might you compare Private Scandals to and why?

Any Nora Roberts book has the same story style. The story is great, and classically Nora. I enjoy the print version.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator sounds like she is either reading an instruction manual or reading a children's novel.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I enjoyed the story, but could not lose myself in the story due to the narrator never delivering the words as a story.

Any additional comments?

This is the first time I have come across a narrator on this site that I will actively avoid. I will not purchase and other audio books narrated by Julie Finneran.

Ugh! Narrator Sucks!

I have never stopped listening to a book before now. I wanted to throw something at the speakers. She was nails-on-the-chalkboard annoying.

decent story a terrible narrator

I've listened to a lot of audio books and this was the worst narrator I've ever heard. It was painful to try to get to the end of the story. my advice would be to read this one, don't listen.

Very Good 5 Stars

Long yes, very good read though. I will never look at news or talk shows the same again. I thought the writer wrote very good characters and great plot lines. I was never bored with this book.

Horrible Reader

How could the performance have been better?

She made the main character whiny and weak. Everytime she read Deana I cringed; wimpy, weak, high pitched and whiny. The Deana I read in book is stoic, solid, a fighter and strong. She ruined the character. She put inflections in the wrong place, said words in a tone that didn't match the description of how it was said in the book, and I could go on. Not to mention the accents, OH MAN! What was she trying to do. If you can't do accents DON'T DO THEM. Fran? wow, it was horrible. That is NOT a Chicago accent.I am dissapointed in the director. Why didn't they redo it when they saw that the "NO' she read was supposed to be a whisper, in shock and instead read as a whine and a plea? Fault to go around in this production.

enjoyable

I enjoyed this book, but it did drag in some places. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the narrator was able to differentiate more between the characters. At times, I couldn't remember who was talking. Otherwise, it was a fun "listen".

Too much information

The story has a lot of unnecessary information and becomes boring. The sex scenes, horny parts are in there just to have sex scenes added to the book and have no relative information to the story. I can’t get to the end... super boring. I’m sure this could hav been condensed and had a good story, but it’s just too long with boring parts that drag on.

Private Scandals by Nora Roberts

Story was great, kept my attention and I wanted to continuously listen to it (which made it over too quickly). However, I found the characters voices sounded so much alike. Couldn't always tell who was talking! Ending was way too chopped off. It should have been expanded a couple of chapters. I felt cheated at the end.

Disappointing

I couldn't listen to the whole story. It was really hard to get into. I was disappointed. Usually stories by Nora Roberts are really good.

Terrible narration

The story was ok, not her best, but the narration was truly painful. The intelligent female protagonist was made whiney and annoying, and every other character, male or female, except one, had the same voice. The best friend from Jersey was all over the place, except Jersey. I struggled through it, gritting my teeth.
