Story
Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows.

Publisher's Summary
Construction industry business coach, speaker, and author, Shawn Van Dyke, has taken the core concepts of Mike Michalowicz's Profit First and customized them to address the specific needs of the construction industry. Profit First for Contractors addresses the major struggles contractors face and provides clear and actionable guidance on how to overcome them. Shawn shows contractors how to go from simply getting by to becoming permanently profitable. This audiobook is for every construction business owner who dreams of prosperity.
Using Van Dyke's Profit First for Contractors system, listeners will learn how to break out of the "craftsman cycle" - the seemingly never-ending loop of urgent tasks and responsibilities that keep contractors from gaining traction toward their important goals. He guides construction business owners how to understand their financial statements and how to use them to determine the markup and margin that lead to profits. You will also learn how to develop solid rules of thumb for the operation of your construction businesses, and how to implement an effective cash management plan that simplifies accounting and leverages normal human behavior. Using real-life stories from actual construction business owners, step-by-step advice, and his conversational twang, Van Dyke puts permanent profitability within reach of every construction business owner.

Not going to help you
I’m always trying to stay motivated and learning more but this was horrible. The steps in this book are what an actual good accountant will set you up with and tell you to do when you first start your business. Heck even a personal banker will tell you to do these things. (Regardless what the author says about an accountant)
Basics of the book. Don’t be the cheapest, don’t try and win every estimate, pay yourself a check, set money aside for taxes. That’s it.
If your not doing that in the first place you shouldn’t own a business or it’s just a hobby.
The chapter of going over numbers and excel sheets probably should have been left out of the audible book as well.

90% crust, 10% rest of pizza.
The amount of usable information to the average person is very little. I read the first 30 mins of this book and couldn’t get through the rest. I skimmed going over 20 min sections. I am glad this book was free. I can see why. The other reviews seem non-genuine. This is all common sense stuff. Nothing groundbreaking or intuitive here. Make profit. There I spoiled the book. This might get deleted now. Make profit guys!
Wow, I think I need to write a book because I understand that I want profit. Wow, I should write one on wanting to put on shoes in the morning. I’ll call it For Shoes - “how to make it walking around without blisters.” Chapter 1: Have you ever wondered why we do things over and over again and still get the same result. This is why I am going to show you how to not get blisters. The definition of insanity is.... you get the bliss.
A lot of the info was served to me by just breathing and walking around places. If you didn’t do a lot of walking around and existing in the world, then this book is for you! Buy it! It’s Groundbreaking! He tells you exactly how to live life by understanding common sense virtues and things.
He also loses me talking about his life. I don’t need this. You’ve not done anything for me. In fact, I did something for you by clicking this book and giving away my precious time.
My precious time. There’s my book.

An Enlightening Look at Profit
Profit First gets right to the point. It wakes up the reader to the realities of running a successful business. Most people, like myself, have a charitable view of their clients finances, and are afraid of charging too much for our services, and not having a complete understanding of all the costs involved with running our businesses, find ourselves running short when preparing and paying for our own costs, that are necessary to be able to be in business.
I am thankful to find this audio book by Shawn Van Dyke, who has been in the field, and has wise and valuable insights, and is an able mentor for those of us in need of this guidance.I
It has been a good and enlightening hearing experience, well worth the time spent.
