So happy to see everyone again!

I've missed Myron and Win, little Pocahontas and Big Cindy. What great characters. The narrator is on point and nails all of the voices. Well done. Story is engaging, captivating and energetic. And in true Harlan Coban style, he keeps giving it to us, even to the very end. Hard to stop listening to, so I finished it quickly. I want more Win! Five stars if we get more Win next time. So good!

This was published in 2007!!

Be careful. After a few minutes, I realized that I had read (or listened to) this book ages ago. It was published in 2007 so not sure why it is just now being released (2022). It is a wonderful book and I enjoyed it a long time ago.

Previous narrator was a pleasure to listen to

Previous narrator was much more enjoyable...there were character developed and personalities assumed. This narrator fails to continue that, which really made the listening experience much better.

That, and I feel like the author got a little lazy and slow with this book compared to the rest in the series.

I prefer this narrator

some people complain that this was a re release with Steven Weber.
my first Harlan Coben book was with Weber and I strongly prefer him. I love that he gives voices to characters. (although several are the same Jewish mother voice as Hester Crimstein lol) at least she was actually in this one.

I thoroughly enjoy Harlen Cobens characters. I wish Steven Weber would go back and do the older ones as well. I don't like the old narrator.

Entertaining

An entertaining story but a bit too much sermonizing. Overall, a good experience. I'll order the next in the series.

who changes the audio reader at book 9?

Weber's voice wasn't as perfect a fit for these characters imho, and at times, that was distracting.

Not happy with new narrator

I expounded on another title in this series.

I never realized the difference a narrator can make on a story.

Hmmmm.....new book? Nope....

This was one of those unique situations where I saw that there was a new Audible release from an author whom I have loved for a very long time with a series that I've read going back many, many years. Unfortunately, at the time, I did not realize that this book had been published 15 years ago (and 15 years ago I did not use Goodreads). Anyway, it did not take me long to realize that I had already read this book, but it had been a long enough time that it was like getting to read it for the first time.

One of the things that happened for me was that I got to enjoy Myron and the gang again. It is hard to believe that there are only 11 books in this series. For some reason, it feels like I've known these characters for much longer. This book - being the 8th book in the series - was from the latter part of the timeline so we got to see Myron and Win when things seem a little more settled. Their characters are more mature, they are older but.... the things that made this series so great are still there. The repartee and sarcastic wit between Myron and Win, Win's unfailing support of Myron and his actions, the loving and comfortable (yet humorous) relationship between Myron and his parents, and most of all, the ability that Myron seems to have of finding trouble no matter the circumstance. Yep, it was all still there.

The thing about these novels that Harlan Coben writes is that they flow so easily. The world is already built, the characters are already developed and all that is left is to follow along as Myron finds himself in the middle of something new. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this series. I was also able to enjoy this on audio, which I honestly can not remember if that was something I did in the past or if I read this before the audio versions became popular. Thinking back, I remember always seeming to find a paperback book in an airport bookstore years ago when business travel was the norm.

So, about this book. Myron gets into this mess because he made a promise to help if ever needed to two teenage girls. These girls were daughters of longtime friends. When one of these girls goes missing, his subsequent actions and questionable decisions land him right in the middle of the situation and the story takes off from there. The thing about Mr. Coben is that he can make even the craziest situations seem plausible. How Myron seems to get from point A to point B can seem to make sense in your mind as you are reading it, but if you had to explain it to someone else, it becomes a bit more difficult.

I liked following Myron as he was trying to figure out what was going on - did she run away or was she taken? Was she in trouble or was she the cause of the trouble? There was the appropriate number of twists and turns that we have come to expect, and I LOVED every time Win was on the page. I especially loved the way we get to see the protectiveness that Win shows when he tries to shield and yet support Myron (i.e. the front row floor tickets to the basketball game the night that the news regarding Jessica is made public). Their relationship has been forged through many, many years and it is as strong as steel.

Yes, this one was a bit "out there" in terms of leaps of logic and you definitely need to increase your level of suspended belief. All in all, it was a good book and it kept my interest throughout. The listening time and reading pace flowed quickly and I thought the narrator did a wonderful job. I actually do now think I have listened to this narrator reading from this series sometime in the past because when Hestor Crimstein did her cameo, the narrator's distinctive voice of the character matched the voice I remembered. The story never dragged and it never felt like the pacing was too slow. If anything, the book was over before I knew it.

So, am I glad I ended up reading this again? Absolutely. The experience was like putting on a comfy sweater and sitting in front of a warm fireplace in a cozy cabin - comfortable and even somewhat familiar. What more can you ask for as a reader?

Slanderous to the snake

Once again, I’m reading out of order, and the only difference in our hero, Myron, has developed a different conscience now but he is still our crime fighting sleuth in his own way. Hester, Crimstein is one of my favorite characters, hence, my title. She is doused like hot sauce in the beginning of the story, but that was it! She has her own story narrated by Stephen Weber, but it is not in this series. See the wild series, frankly, I like those stories better As Hester is in them and she is a laugh a minute.
The author in this story expounds on the subject that was Heavily in the news about University’s and which students get in.
I’m on a blitz with this author, and some of his stories are just a bit too long for me but his endings always make it worthwhile with a great aha moment. This one doesn’t disappoint.
Were my comments of help?
