Publisher's Summary

Bookshop owner Addie Greyborne must solve a locked-room murder in a supposedly haunted mansion to recover a priceless Sherlock Holmes original...

The seaside New England town of Greyborne Harbor is home to many grand estates, including the Queen Anne Victorian Addie inherited from her great aunt. Now one of those mansions is holding an estate sale, which is just what the bookshop owner needs to replenish her supply of rare editions - even if the house is rumored to be haunted.

Assisting an overwhelmed insurance appraiser with the inventory, Addie discovers an 1887 magazine containing Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, which she estimates to be worth over $150,000.

But when Addie later finds the appraiser dead in the estate's private library, with the door bolted from the inside, and the priceless edition missing, it's a mystery worthy of the Great Detective himself. She's certain the death and the robbery are connected - but who, other than a ghost who can walk through walls, could have gotten in to do the deed? It's up to Addie to find the key to the crime - before she's the next one cornered by a killer...

Tried to stay with the series….

I tried to stay with the series but had to give it up after this book. I do not like the Simon character at all. Mark should have been the one for Addie. The story was good I just don’t like the way the characters turned out. First time not sticking with a series😔

skipped from chapter 10 to last chapter

There is such a difference between excitement and stress. Why read a cozy mystery other than for fun and escapism? A constantly beleaguered heroine is exhausting.

Becoming annoying

Addie is becoming less intuitive and more impulsive. More more like a teenager and less likes a savy career woman. Also I can’t stand Simon. He’s so simpering and bland and uninteresting. If she marries him
I’m done. Hank is such a better character. The added characters are so so too. Very disappointing.

Main character is edging toward TSTL status.

***minor spoiler alert, overall plot not indicated.***

The story isn't bad. It's fairly interesting and compelling. That being said it's worth the idle listen, (I used it to burn time on my commute) but the main character is starting to go off the rails. She's no longer quirky and endearing, she's down right annoying.

While I'm glad the stupid love triangle that has weighed down this series has been resolved, I'm not thrilled with the result. Though the "winner" was written much better this time, probably because his presence was toned down a bit. He wasn't nearly so desperate and cloyingly annoying as he was in the last book. I mean, Addie's a nice character, but the desperation that the author writes in these men make you wonder if someone is hypnotizing these guys. They are ridiculously desperate for her. Nice fantasy, but over the top. But the most disturbing is that the main character, who has always been stubborn and impulsive, has now started edging towards TSTL (Too Stupid To Live). Some of the choices she makes in this make me think the "dog with a bone" reference should be more like "a horse running into a burning barn." They don't make her brave, just stupid.

And the two new characters who seem to be new regulars are not that interesting or appealing.

Locked Door Mystery

A missing Arthur Conan Doyle first edition leads to a murder with the victim inside a room locked from the inside. Abbie does work worthy of Sherlock himself to find a killer. Great work.
