The first book in a brand-new series, The Last Kingdom is set in England during the reign of King Alfred. Uhtred is an English boy, born into the aristocracy of ninth-century Northumbria. Orphaned at 10, he is captured and adopted by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Yet Uhtred's fate is indissolubly bound up with Alfred, King of Wessex, who rules over the only English kingdom to survive the Danish assault. The struggle between the English and the Danes and the strife between christianity and paganism is the background to Uhtred's growing up.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The latest ancient epic in the new Athenian series from the best-selling author of Emperor and War of the Roses.
Two legendary battles. One fearless warrior....
Themistocles stands as an archon of Athens: the might of the city is his to command. Yet he is no nobleman, distrusted by many for his modest birthright.
For his presumption.
But those who stand against him cannot argue with two things: his victories as a warrior and the vast Persian force heading their way.
And so Themistocles must fight. To survive the game of politics, to make his name, he must prove himself again and again in battle. On the sea. On land. In the arena of public opinion.
His enemies are legion, his allies do not trust him and the Persians would corrupt him - but history belongs to the courageous....

Another Grandslam in the Court of Fictional History
No expert on History but 62 and been an avid nerd when it comes to ancient and medieval. Fiction and the actual events as they transpired. Conn always manages to tip toe along the path between the two which provides a rollercoaster ride on what could be a boring stroll through the history of Athens. The storyteller as well in my opinion fits in perfectly to this audio experience. You probably have read the first book in this series already, make sure you do and I promise you the perfect escape from the day to day grind.
