À propos de cet audio

When Queen Samara Rani fulfills the promise she made to Emperor Valentin Kos to visit his court and meet with his advisers, she knows they won't welcome her with open arms, especially when she's been tasked with discovering the traitors within their ranks - traitors she tricked out of five million credits.

As soon as Samara begins her investigation, it becomes clear that Valentin's advisers want her gone and they aren't picky about how. After their tactics turn violent, Samara and Valentin race to unravel the web of treachery and lies before the next attack ends in tragedy.

When the conflict escalates in ferocity and rumors start blaming Samara, she is forced to continue her hunt alone. Uncovering traitors is difficult when courtiers learn to lie before they learn to walk, and one misstep could cost her life. However, Rogue Queens aren't easy to kill, and Samara has more than a few tricks of her own.

Jessie Mihalik is an author I listen to when I want something fun and exciting. Her books (so far) are like Marvel or Star Trek movies- I like them for the comedy and adventure, not character building or social commentary. Since I listen to audiobooks to brighten up household chores and my work commute, I think they’re a great choice.

As in Mihalik’s Consortium series, this book has a kick-butt female lead who falls in the “damsels causing distress” category. She is both spy and soldier. Changing a few details, the storyline could just as easily take place in a medieval fantasy book as in a “galaxy far, far away”. It’s definitely soft-sci fi, which is how I like science fiction audiobooks- more about the characters and adventure than the science.

My biggest disappointment with this series is the narration. The emperor sounds young and vulnerable, like the lead in a movie aimed at pre-teens, not like the ruler of a galactic empire. That makes it very hard for me to become invested in the romance: he comes across as too young and immature to be a partner for the Rogue Queen.
