Story
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on legends of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.

Publisher's Summary
The hotly anticipated sequel to the instant New York Times best-selling YA fantasy about Tarisai’s quest to change her fate.
For the first time, an Empress Redemptor sits on Aritsar’s throne. To appease the sinister spirits of the dead, Tarisai must now anoint a council of her own, coming into her full power as a Raybearer. She must then descend into the Underworld, a sacrifice to end all future atrocities.
Tarisai is determined to survive. Or at least, that’s what she tells her increasingly distant circle of friends. Months into her shaky reign as empress, child spirits haunt her, demanding that she pay for past sins of the empire.
With the lives of her loved ones on the line, assassination attempts from unknown quarters, and a handsome new stranger she can’t quite trust, Tarisai fears the pressure may consume her. But in this finale to the Raybearer duology, Tarisai must learn whether to die for justice...or to live for it.

Character Rich Sequel
REDEMPTOR is the emotional and dramatic conclusion to the RAYBEARER series. It’s a story filled with growth, sacrifice, love, and acceptance that ends with a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion.
Tarisai is a strong character with a big heart, whose need for love and who grew up under a manipulative mother, must learn to love and accept herself. She took on so much and blamed herself for things that were, logically, not her fault. I was glad to see her work through that arc and find her worth, which is an important theme to the whole book.
There are plenty of side characters, new and old, who add complexities to Tarisai’s journey and who strengthen her. There were a lot of them to go through and at times I was needing to pause and remember who was who.
The world building and lore is well crafted and vibrant in creativity and mythology. There are unique creatures and a certain setting near the end that borders on raw magic. I deeply enjoyed traversing this culture-rich world.
The writing itself is smooth and solid with slower pacing, but enough action to keep things tense at crucial moments.
All in all, I’m glad I gave this duology and try and recommend it to anyone interested in culture-rich fantasy with important themes and a wide cast of characters.

The first one was better
I still enjoyed this story and following the conclusion to Tari’s story but the first one was better. I honestly found Tari extremely annoying in this one and the ending was really predictable. This is still an important story and Ifueko creates beautiful worlds.

The first half of the book was a little heavy world building and story set up wise which I didn’t expect but once we got past that I LOVED this book almost as much as the first!
