About this listen

“All magic is beautiful...and terrible. Do you not see the beauty in yours, nor the terror in mine? You can stop a heart, and I can stop your breath.”

She is heir to a Sultanate that once ruled the world. He is an unwanted prince with the power to destroy. She is order and intellect, a woman fit to rule in a man's place. He is chaos and violence and will stop at nothing to protect his people.

His magic answers hers with shadow for light. They need each other, but the cost of balance may be too high a price. Magic is dying and the only way to save it is to enlist mages who wield the forbidden power of death, mages cast out centuries ago in a brutal and bloody war.

Now, a new war is coming. Science and machines to replace magic and old religion.

They must find a way to save their people from annihilation and balance the sacred Wheel—but first, they will have to balance their own forbidden passion. His peace for her tempest, his restlessness for her calm.

Night and day, dusk and dawn, the end, and the beginning.

I enjoyed the world building and the dynamic growth of the MC relationships. Will continue to listen to the rest of this series! I hope JD Evans keeps writing more wonderful series like these.

Refreshingly different and very entertaining. Finally an FMC that doesn't irritate me. I loved her level-headedness, her intelligence, and ability to play the game to get what she wants. Not every time sword-wielding, strong-headed, reckless, impractical, and "oh so special overnight" FMCs I keep seeing everywhere.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and seeing how they all intertwine.

Loved it!

The plot, the romance, the characters EVERYTHING was perfect. J.D Evans is a genius and I fell in love with these characters. The only thing I disliked was the way the voice actress voiced Naime. I don’t know why she decided to add an odd accent to her, it doesn’t even sound like an Arab accent. It was not necessary at all and definitely suspended my belief throughout. Besides that I absolutely adored this book and will be buying the physical copies as well.

Very good overall. Story is compelling and interesting, characters are nuanced and grow in interesting ways. Avoids most of the romance tropes I dislike.

If it weren't an Audible exclusive I'd have already bought the next book, but as it is I have to wait a month because buying books on Audible is complicated.

The story is fascinating. The world building is great, but I don’t understand why we are hearing these southeast Asian accents when they talk to each other, but not the narrator? it is just a bit dissonant - I am confused by this overlay.

why the accents?
