Publisher's Summary

After losing the family fortune to a fraudulent psychic, inventor Henry Strauss is determined to bring the otherworld under control through the application of science. All he needs is a genuine haunting to prove his Electro-Séance will work.

A letter from wealthy industrialist Dominic Gladfield seems the answer to his prayers. Gladfield’s proposition: a contest pitting science against spiritualism, with a hefty prize for the winner. The contest takes Henry to Reyhome Castle, the site of a series of brutal murders decades earlier. There he meets his rival for the prize, the dangerously appealing Vincent Night. Vincent is handsome, charming...and determined to get Henry into bed. Henry can’t afford to fall for a spirit medium, let alone the competition. But nothing in the haunted mansion is quite as it seems, and soon winning the contest is the least of Henry’s concerns. For the evil stalking the halls of Reyhome Castle wants to claim not just Henry and Vincent’s lives but their very souls.

Interesting premise but boring delivery/characters

Although it might be the narration (which seemed rushed, awkward, and echoed like it had been recorded in a bathroom) this wasn't a particularly enjoyable listen. I think I'd prefer reading the book but an hour in, I'm struggling to care about any of the characters. The lustful thoughts of the leads are jarring and seem rushed, the supporting characters are unmemorable, and I was hoping for some eerie supernatural undertones but nothing yet. I wanted to love this but I don't think I'll manage to get through much more.

Not Enough Emotion

Despite the interesting plot and desire to be taken in by the ghost story, I didn't feel much suspense in this book. I didn't feel the *need* to keep reading/listening, and I didn't feel particularly concerned for the characters. Without adequate emotions from our heroes, I wasn't afforded the opportunity to feel what they feel.

This lack of emotion really took its toll on the romantic aspect of the story, as well. I didn't particularly see that these two genuinely felt love (or anywhere near to it), and I didn't quite get that they belonged together.

One aspect of the story that bothered me was the racism and prejudice. I recognize that this takes place in the past, but Vincent's "red" skin is mentioned often, even by Henry. There are other prejudices and little comments/internal thoughts that bothered me.

I'm not particularly interested in reading/listening to the next book in the series, so I'll leave it here.
