Publisher's Summary

Ella has a Thing. She sees a classmate grow up to become a caring nurse. A neighbor's son murdered in a drive-by shooting. Things that haven't happened yet. Kev, born while Los Angeles burned around them, wants to protect his sister from a power that could destroy her. But when Kev is incarcerated, Ella must decide what it means to watch her brother suffer while holding the ability to wreck cities in her hands.

Rooted in the hope that can live in anger, Riot Baby is as much an intimate family story as a global dystopian narrative. It burns fearlessly toward revolution and has quietly devastating things to say about love, fury, and the black American experience.

Ella and Kev are both shockingly human and immeasurably powerful. Their childhoods are defined and destroyed by racism. Their futures might alter the world.

Not for me.

This book wasn't for me too much anger for my taste. I just wanted more, much more from the story. It was the making of a great story. In the beginning, then it went places to unbelievable even for me. Lol.

Mindfulness and thought provoking fiction for our current times.

This story is heartbreaking and necessary for our current state of the world. I thought the super hero aspect would be fun and exciting, however it becomes complicated and introspective. I listened to this book well before the George Floyd protests and while I watch the world around me, I kept thinking about this book and how this fictional book was rooted in something so very real.

I think this book can lead to many needed conversations about race, equality, police brutality and how anger manifests from these issues and what needs to happen next with that anger.

Finally

This is one of the rare books I’ve loved from start to finish. This is the black superpower book I’ve always wanted to read and the author narrating his own book so wonderfully is the icing on the cake.

Why am I still mad 😠

Kev (Kevin) is the riot baby of the title, a boy born during the Los Angeles riots of 1992. His sister, Ella, has a telekinetic gift that manifests in multiple ways: she can see the future, she can perform astral projection, and, eventually, she can fly. Kev, their mother and Ella all must deal with racism in American across the nation from Los Angeles to New York while trying to live in a nation that hates them for their skin color. The book jumps timelines visiting significant times in their lives. The tone of the book made me have a constant frown of anger on my brow because I empathized with the characters. I wanted Ella to do more damage with her gift but realized the message of this book wasn’t about retaliation which is why I rated it a 4. Kevin also has a big role in this book sharing the horror of being in the jail system, but Ella’s presence seems to help him throughout his life and set him up for what is to come.

Amazing

This was so much more than just a great book. I wish it could have been about twenty hours longer: the writing is beautiful, the imagery is jarring and so easily imagined, the narration was perfect and it almost didn’t feel like a sci-fi book. It was definitely science fiction, but it was rooted in something so real and relatable to current life. I started it this morning and only pressed pause a few times, very begrudgingly to take some work calls, and went right back to it immediately when the call was over. For such a relatively short audiobook, it felt so much longer and yet not even remotely long enough. I will absolutely be purchasing the hard copy of this book and rereading for maximum affect. I will reiterate however, the authors narration is absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend it.

All over the place..

I appreciate the fact that it was written by a African American and the fact that some of the like Jamaican patios that was in the book was done correctly however, personal this was hard to follow it needs more character development and i felt like I was going around in circles trying to understand what exactly was going on and why. It just feels like too much going on at once and nothing is really direct but it has potential.

A story for this time

As I watch video after video online of police opening fire on reporters and violently attacking peaceful Black protesters, this is a story for this time.
.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening. Great story and the author is an excellent reader.
