About this listen

In a sleepy steel-mill town, the ultimate battle between Good and Evil is about to begin....

Sinnissippi Park, in Hopewell, Illinois, has long hidden a mysterious evil, locked away from humankind by powers greater than most could even imagine. But now the malevolent creatures that normally skulk in the shadows of the park grow bolder, and old secrets hint at a violent explosion.

The brewing conflict draws John Ross to Hopewell. A Knight of the Word, Ross is plagued by nightmares that tell him someone evil is coming to unleash an ancient horror upon the world. Caught between them is 14-year-old Nest Freemark, who senses that something is terribly wrong but has not yet learned to wield the budding power that sets her apart from her friends.

Now the future of humanity depends upon a man haunted by his dreams and a gifted young girl - two souls who will discover what survives when hope and innocence are shattered forever....

I shied away from Terry Brooks after the Sword of Shannara because I thought it was too derivative of Tolkien.

The Knight of the Word series is a fantastic story with some very original constructs. Now that I know it is also a prequel to the Shannara series I am excited again to follow the story arc to its end.

Well read, very entertaining and great value.

Great concept

I really enjoyed this novel. I easily connected with many of the characters. I especially enjoyed spending time with Nest, her friends, Pick, and Old Bob. The parts of the story that were not rooted in fantasy felt genuine. I really cared about Nest’s relationship with her friends and grandparents. I even found the plotline about the strike at the steel mill interesting because of Old Bob’s investment into it. The fantasy elements of the novel were not what I was expecting, but they were well crafted and expertly interwoven with the non fantasy elements.

The one negative about the story is that it can drag at times. I personally believe the book could have been a bit shorter.

George Wilson was a lot of fun as a narrator. He reminded me of a grandpa telling fireside stories. His voice for Pick, a magical creature, was perfect! Like a grandpa he does talk slowly, you may want to increase the narration speed.

I’m eager to start the next book in the series.

A Great Urban Fantasy
