Publisher's Summary

A New York Times best seller, Scary Close is Donald Miller at his best.

From the author of Blue Like Jazz comes a story about finding the keys to a healthy relationship and discovering they are also the keys to a healthy family, a healthy career, and a healthy mind. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important.

After decades of failed relationships and painful drama, Donald Miller decided he’d had enough. Impressing people wasn’t helping him connect with anyone. He’d built a life of public isolation, yet he dreamed of meaningful relationships. So at 40-years-old, he made a scary decision: to be himself no matter what it cost.

Scary Close is a book about the risk involved in choosing to impress fewer people and connect with more, about the freedom that comes when we stop acting and start loving. It is a story about knocking down old walls to create a healthy mind, a strong family, and a satisfying career. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important.

Compelling and thoughtful

I didn’t remember why I originally downloaded this book but I enjoyed it so much more then I thought.
It is a compelling journey through the authors process of working on their relationship skills and weaves in stories of people in their life who’s names you may even recognize.
I highly recommend this audio book to people who enjoy exploring the life stories of those who are good at self reflection!

I've read it three times now

I've read/listened to Scary Close three times now, and I'm sure I will again. Donald Miller has such an understanding of the human story, and such a way with words.

It's scary to go real

Written in Miller's affable and accessable way, this is an accurate and truly helpful book on understanding and gaining authenticity in relationships. So often we don't even know how we're encumbered and sabotaging ourselves, and it takes a new education or a new revelation to get free. In this book, Miller let's us walk along side him through his own journey on this front and in so doing, leaves us valuable lessons that get at the heart of relationships.

Scary close & scary good!

Perhaps the single most helpful part of this book was when Donald compares writer's block to intimacy. Am I too afraid to write what's next because it won't be perfect? Am I too afraid to be known and loved because she'll find out I'm not perfect?
