Publisher's Summary

A compelling stand-alone lesbian paranormal romance, part one in the award-winning Shape-Shifter series.

For solitary novelist Jorie Price, true love seems as fictional as the shape-shifting creatures she writes about in her paranormal romances. Griffin Westmore doesn't believe in love, either, but she's one of those not-so-fictional shape-shifters who secretly live among humans.

When Jorie's writing gets uncomfortably close to the truth, Griffin is sent to investigate and, if necessary, kill the author to protect the secrets of her kind. But when Griffin unexpectedly finds herself drawn to Jorie, her world is turned upside down. Hell, she's supposed to kill the human, not fall in love with her! How can she complete her mission now?

Contains mature themes.

Jae scores with this paranormal thriller!

Though I can't say that I specifically seek out paranormal shape-shifter books, if Jae writes it I will read it. Because the woman is good and she takes the time to flesh out characters and deliver fully developed stories. This is less of a romance than a "thriller" perhaps, but the slow burn of the connection between the two MCs is a thread throughout the book. If you're looking primarily for romance, it takes a really long time to get there. BUT if you're willing to make a time investment in an unusual and entertaining story with two strong female characters (while enjoying the delicious tones of Abby Craden) by all means, give this one a go. I'm glad I did!

Life can change and everything is second nature.

This paranormal story that Jae gives us is so well written I found my heartracing with the characters. Abby Craden is beyond amazing as she makes other world characters come to life. The earth and love the two wow become strong, loving partners that are so real thanks to Abby and Jae's brilliant writing. Jori is a writer with more skills than the books she writes. Her dreams are of a world she can only believe does not exist. Griffin is a liger that is very real and a part of Jori's dream world. They have a connection even they can't understand. As the shapeshifter world Jori writes about threatens the other world Griffin must go from being ordered to kill her to being her protector. They both must learn to trust each other and see those who love them in a different light. The story is full of very scary moments, amazing chance scenes, creatures that should scare us but ask us to suspend disbelief. There is so many twists and turns in this story you can't put it down. Stretch how you see the world and enjoy a cast of characters that you will love. I love when you can experience such complex characters and still love the journey. I loved this book.

Can’t wait for more!

I love Abby Craden’s narration as usual. I only wish there was more lesbian romance. The build up has me itching for more. I’ll be not so patiently waiting for the next book in the series.

Sound as great as it was to read

Not all narrators fit a story, Abby Craden was a perfect fit for the first of this series. I always read the printed book prior to purchasing the audio and this audio matches the book perfectly. Way to go Jae and Abby Craden both print and audio come to life.

Very good!

I had this book on pre-order mostly because I LOVE Abby Craden and I like Jae well enough. This story was interesting and very well thought out. There are lots of players to keep track of but it doesn’t get confusing. The story is intricate but not complicated. Abby Craden, as alway, gave a wonderful performance. Jae tends to focus on the story more than the romance and I both love and hate that about her writing. I’m a mushy romantic so I like the focus to be on the romance but Jae makes it interesting and fast paced enough to where the story still holds my attention. I wish there were more paranormal lesbian romances out there. Gerri Hill has a couple and I LOVE them. (Also narrated by Abby Craden) This one was also very good and worth the credit. Happy reading!

I just couldn't with this one

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of paranormal fiction. But this story had me rolling my eyes over and over and the fabulous Abby Craden just accentuated all that was wrong with this book for me. And I'm a big Abby Craden fan but in this book, her tones of voice, timbers and expressions of the different characters was cliche. I actually quit with about 3 ½ hours left to go and returned the book. AND IN TERMS OF LESBIAN ROMANCES NARRATED BY ABBY CRADEN, I NEVER DO THAT!
Griffin's macho tone and bravado was showboating, was in conflict with her continuous dithering about her mission. The macho structure, or shall i just say it, "toxic masculinity" of her Pride was a total turnoff. The tones of voice of all the toxic expression was all the same, just different timbers depending on what character was speaking.
And even though I didn't finish the book, it was so predictable as to where it was going, what the moment of ultimate choice was going to be and it wasn't about whether or not the two main characters would become lovers, but rather when they would. The tension of the unknown was just sorely lacking.
Sorry, Jae. Sorry Abby. I just couldn't with this one.

Liked it a lot

Okay so this book focuses primarily on the non-romantic aspect of the storyline. It was actually really good and kept my attention the whole time. There was a really great connection between the two main characters but it never really got super romantic and there was definitely no sex (except for one short scene in the epilogue). So if you’re looking for that, this isn’t the book for you. However, like I said, the sci/fi fantasy storyline was really good and I enjoyed it a lot over all. Also....Abby Craden. Enough said.
