Story
For Detective Billy Harney, getting shot in the head, stalked by a state’s attorney, and accused of murder by his fellow cops is a normal week on the job. So when a drive-by shooting on the Chicago's West Side turns political, he leads the way to a quick solve. But Harney's instincts - his father was once chief of detectives and his twin sister, Patti, is also on the force - run deep. As a population hungry for justice threatens to riot, he realizes that the three known victims are hardly the only casualties.

Story
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Story
LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis has solved a lot of murder cases. On many of them - the ones he calls "different" - he taps the brain of brilliant psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware. But neither Alex nor Milo are prepared for what they find on an early morning call to a deserted mansion in Bel Air. This one’s beyond different. This is predation, premeditation, and cruelty on a whole new level. Four people have been slaughtered and left displayed bizarrely and horrifically in a stretch limousine. Confounding the investigation, none of the victims seems to have any connection to any other.

Story
Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered. Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Story
Weeks before NYPD Detective Michael Bennett is to marry his longtime love, Mary Catherine, an assassin announces his presence in the city with a string of grisly murders. Each victim is a young woman. And each has been killed in a manner as precise as it was gruesome. Tasked with working alongside the FBI, Bennett and his gung-ho new partner uncover multiple cold-case homicides across the country that fit the same distinctive pattern - proving the perpetrator they seek is as experienced at ending lives as he is at evading detection.

Story
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best seller
Psychologist Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis search for answers to a brutal, decades-old crime in this electrifying psychological thriller from the master of suspense.
LAPD Homicide Lieutenant Milo Sturgis is a master detective. He has a near-perfect solve rate, and he’s written his own rule book. Some of those successes - the toughest ones - have involved his best friend, the brilliant Psychologist Alex Delaware. But Milo doesn’t call Alex in unless cases are "different". This murder warrants an immediate call. Milo’s independence has been compromised as never before, as the department pressures him to cater to the demands of a mogul: a hard-to-fathom, mega-rich young woman who is obsessed with reopening the coldest of cases - the decades-old death of the mother she never knew.
The facts describe a likely loser: a mysterious woman found with a bullet in her head in a torched Cadillac that has overturned on infamously treacherous Mulholland Drive. No physical evidence, no witnesses, no apparent motive. And a slew of detectives have already worked the case and failed. But as Delaware and Sturgis begin digging, the mist begins to lift. Too many coincidences. Facts turn out to be anything but. And as they soon discover, very real threats lurking in the present.
This is Delaware/Sturgis at their best: traversing the beautiful but forbidding place known as Los Angeles and exhuming the past in order to bring a vicious killer to justice.

Another Kellerman Gem
I find Kellerman's books are all well written containing numerous surprise endings, and entertaining characters. His detailed descriptions of virtually every character introduced put you right in the conversations each time with a mind's eye view. This book is no exception, and the audio presentation (very well done) only enhances the overall result. A very good read.

John Rubinstein makes a great story even better.
I cannot longer separate Milo's voice from Rubinstein in my mind. He inhabits the character that well. Kellerman never disappoints, but John Rubinstein takes it to another level. Sort of like we are sitting around a pub and he's just telling me a tale.

Thank you for another great Alex Delaware novel!
Jonathan Kellerman’s novels are consistently wonderful — book after book, year after year. This book is no exception. The plot is interesting, the characters engaging, and the writing is great. As always. I can’t think of another author who has had a series that has maintained such high quality for so many books. Each is a gem!

Alex and Milo's Impending Retirement
First, let me say that the first Audible book I ever listened to was Kellerman's "Survival of the Fittest", and I was hooked! Now, sadly, it appears that it is time for me to say goodbye to Alex and Milo.
Kellerman's books have become predictable, and somewhat, boring. Is it just me, or is Alex Delaware becoming a bit of a narcissist? I mean...he is always one or two steps ahead of Milo....making Milo look more and more inept. Alex's character loves to let the reader know that - not only is he wiser than Milo but - he is healthier, wealthier, and has lots more sex with his partner, Robin (the perfect woman, btw).
Now, let's discuss the Narrator...or not! This was, no doubt, the worst narration of a Kellerman book that I have listened to. I mean...Milo's accent was horrible! I feel like a jilted fan...but everything must come to an end at some point.

Mixed feelings
I used to like this author, but I’m having trouble with the overload of description in his last couple of books. All that minute detail, I find myself zoning out and waiting for the story to return. A good story but too much filler.
