About this listen

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

The narrator was awesome for this book. And the story line I felt was more complex, which I enjoyed. I find a lot of books in this genre end up being simple and not that complicated. But this one was very good! Easy enough listen, but grabs your attention.

Its an entertaining read! The villain's presence isn't felt much but still got interesting concept. lol. Story's pretty straightforward and the plotwist is not bad. lol.

Performance is amazing! I could feel the emotion and I could tell the characters apart! Tho maybe a different voice for the Darkling could've been picked? It was a tad bit dry and monotonous.
It was nice overall! lol

Fun times ahead lol

Fantasy novels deal with so many issues these days. This one, the first of the Grisha novels, covers racism, class distinctions, elitism, and young love.
Technical quibble: Antlers are shed by deer after the mating season. If they just needed the antler, there was no need to kill the stag. Of course, this is a fantasy, set in a fictional universe.

Lauren Fortgang does an amazing job making u feel like different characters are speaking. Her nuanced voice really added to the story and its narrative. Speaking of narrative, the plot was okay. It didn't blow me away, but it wasn't awful either. I walked away from the book excited about what had transpired but not really caring about the characters as much as I feel like I should have.

A great listen...an okay book

I was surprised that instead of a fantasy novel, I got a PG romance novel, and sadly, not even a particular charming, clever or funny one. If you don’t mind tracking along inside the mind of a whiny, depressing teenager, torn between her childhood sweetheart and the hot villain - this is the book for you. If you were hoping for layered characters or a magical high fantasy setting, move along. It’s easy listening, though, and the voice actress did an ok job.

Great story, I will be listening to the rest in the series. It's a clean YA story. I do prefer a little more naughtiness in the books I listen to so if your looking for that you won't find it in this book.
Lauren Fortgang did a great job narrating and fit the story really well.

Good story

Good but I think the pacing needs work, loved the story so far and will be continuing but felt like there were long politic chapters between exciting things. Overall enjoyed it though
