Story
As an event planner, Gillian Romano’s an expert at rolling with the punches and solving unexpected problems. But her flight getting hijacked while returning from a job is definitely out of her skill set. Passengers are being murdered, and when she’s chosen by the terrorists to be their mouthpiece, even more innocent lives rest on Gillian’s shoulders. Only the calm, reassuring voice on the other end of the line keeps her sane, forging a bond with a stranger she’s never seen but trusts with her life.
Publisher's Summary
Having grown up with a port-wine birthmark on her face and neck, Quinn Dixon’s heard them all. Her own mother couldn’t bear to touch her, let alone strangers. Years of stares and insults from everyone from classmates to foster families have made her understandably reluctant to trust. So when John comes along, of course he couldn’t be interested in more than a brief affair. He’ll get sick of all the gawking and whispers soon enough and leave her…just like everyone else.
John “Driftwood” Trettle was captivated by Quinn the moment they met. After months of skirting around their attraction, one pivotal evening finds John seizing the reins and refusing to be denied a chance to prove he’s worthy of Quinn’s time, her trust, and her love. To show her he’ll have her back, always, and defend her against anyone cruel or stupid enough to hurt his woman.
But he can’t protect against an unknown threat. Even if it wears a familiar face....

A long awaited story
This is the story of Quinn Dixon. Born with a port wine stain birthmark on her cheek and neck, she lives with people always staring. She met John "Driftwood" Trettle at a party. John didn't notice her birthmark, he saw her. It took months to get through to her, until he declared they were dating. Quinn found herself making friends with the other firefighters and their women at Station 7. John's best friend, Taco, finds a woman who just could not fit in with the women. Quinn finds out why in the most brutal way.... This is the first narration in this series by Stella Bloom. You know her from the Delta Force series. While a bit different than Erin Mallon's narration, this is still a wonderful performance. I cannot wait for Susan Stoker to give me Taco and Koren, & Moose and Tiger's stories to finish the series!

True beauty comes from within
We’ve met Quinn in prior stories in the series and know that she has a port wine birthmark on one side of her face. We’ve also observed the chemistry between her and firefighter John aka Driftwood. This is their story. Although it starts off a rather slow, the pace picks up about midway, and it is good. Quinn deals with ridicule almost every day and Driftwood tries to protect her. What happens when someone within the close knit group tries to hurt Quinn? Will Driftwood and Quinn have their HEA?

Holy Smokes!!
John aka, Driftwood and Quinn make a power couple you don’t expect! I loved, love, loved this story. There were a few times that the characters get so dang real. These could be people you hang out with on a daily basis, then a few times I was glad they were just characters in a book because there were a few times where I wanted to smack them both, seriously! I digress... lol I couldn’t stop listening! This was a one day read/listen for me. As are most of Sudan’s books. Hot. Intense and a whole lot of wtf moments are ahead of anyone brave enough to step into John and Quinn’s story. It’s a ride well worth the ups and downs!

Beauty is more than skin deep
Quinn and Driftwood’s story. I was intrigued by these two in the previous novel and was excited to hear their story. As always, Stoker does not disappoint. She is SO good at weaving an interesting story that often has a person that society views as other—differently abled, socially challenged, etc. I love that she writes love stories about flawed people since we can all relate. The beauty in her characters shine through in who they and how they look. Also you learn along the way, I knew absolutely nothing about port wine birthmarks before listening to this story. I have the same complaint about all of her novels, they are too captivating, and it is hard to stop listening. Looking forward to Taco getting his much deserved HEA.
