À propos de cet audio
By the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell’s Shogun is soon to be a major FX/Hulu TV series!
Shogun, the classic epic novel of feudal Japan that captured the heart of a culture and the imagination of the world, is now available for the first time in serial format. Part Two contains the second half of the complete novel.
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed.
Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, Shogun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, Shogun is, as the New York Times put it, ‘'not only something you read—you live it.’‘

Histoire
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

There is none better than Shogun
I read this book when it was first published mid 1970. At the time I literally read every minute I could steal, at night and at work during the day. It is mesmerizing. It's one of the only books I've read twice and now listened to it. The experience was intense. Ralph Lister as narrator is the absolute best choice for this story. To me this audio book is in a league of its own. The writing unparalleled, true historical fiction, the framework Japan's culture and history, and the narration brings it to life in such a way that you feel like a hidden observer, you are right there.

Got this book IMMEDIATELY after finishing “part 1”.
Finished the whole thing in 2 weeks.
Fantastic story and character arcs.
Love how the narrator says “BASTARD” or does an impression of the falcon “ECK EKC EKC!!”

Incredible all the way through.
This is my first book in the Asian Saga and I'm looking forward to continue reading. Clavell's character building and overall approach to storytelling is consistently gripping and the content of this book is made moreso by a reasonable grounding in history and (some) fact.

Good until the end
I really enjoyed the story. There was a lot of politics and not a huge amount of action, but the storyline was engrossing so I didn't mind. The ending was extraordinarily disappointing though. It's like the writer got bored and wanted to finish writing as soon as possible. Otherwise a good book.
