Story
In Israel, a man clutching a backpack searches desperately for a boat. In Minnesota, Virgil Flowers gets a message from Lucas Davenport: You're about to get a visitor. It's an Israeli cop, and she's tailing a man who's smuggled out an extraordinary relic - a copper scroll revealing startling details about the man known as King Solomon. Wait a minute, laughs Virgil. Is this one of those Da Vinci Code deals? The secret scroll, the blockbuster revelation, the teams of murderous bad guys? Should I be boning up on my Bible verses? He looks at the cop. She's not laughing.

Story
Bonnie and Clyde, they thought. And what's-his-name, the sidekick. Three teenagers with dead-end lives, and chips on their shoulders, and guns. The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going? As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers' cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down.

One late fall Sunday in southern Minnesota, a farmer brings a load of soybeans to a local grain elevator - and a young man hits him on the head with a steel bar, drops him into the grain bin, waits until he's sure he's dead, and then calls the sheriff to report the "accident." Story
Flowers is only in his late 30's, but he's been around the block a few times, and he doesn't think much can surprise him anymore. He's wrong. It's a hot, humid summer night in Minnesota, and Flowers is in bed with one of his ex-wives (the second one , if you're keeping count ) when the phone rings. It's Lucas Davenport. There's a body in Stillwater, two shots to the head, found near a veterans' memorial. And the victim has a lemon in his mouth.

Story
The first storm comes from, of all places, the Minnesota zoo. Two large and very rare Amur tigers have vanished from their cage, and authorities are worried sick that they've been stolen for their body parts. Traditional Chinese medicine prizes those parts for home remedies, and people will do extreme things to get what they need. Some of them are a great deal more extreme than others - as Virgil is about to find out.

The thrilling new novel in the number one New York Times best-selling series. In Southeast Minnesota, down on the Mississippi, a school board meeting is coming to an end. The board chairman announces that the rest of the meeting will be closed, due to personnel issues. “Issues” is correct. The proposal up for a vote before them is whether to authorize the killing of a local reporter. The vote is four to one in favor. Meanwhile, not far away, Virgil Flowers is helping out a friend by looking into a dognapping, which seems to be turning into something much bigger and uglier.

Story
At the local state university, two feuding departments have faced off on the battleground of science and medicine. Each carries their views to extremes that may seem absurd, but highly educated people of sound mind and good intentions can reasonably disagree, right? Then a renowned and confrontational scholar winds up dead, and Virgil Flowers is brought in to investigate...and as he probes the recent ideological unrest, he soon comes to realize he's dealing with people who, on this one particular issue, are functionally crazy.

Lucas Davenport had crossed paths with her before. A rich psychopath, Taryn Grant had run successfully for the US Senate, where Lucas had predicted she'd fit right in. He was also convinced that she'd been responsible for three murders, though he'd never been able to prove it. Once a psychopath had gotten that kind of rush, though, he or she often needed another fix, so he figured he might be seeing her again. He was right.

Murder. Scandal. Politics. And one billionaire heiress so dangerous in so many ways. An explosive Lucas Davenport thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author John Sandford. All hell has broken loose in the capital. An influential state senator has been caught with something very, very nasty on his office computer. The daughter of a US Senator is monitoring her social media presence when she finds a picture of herself on a strange blog. And there are other pictures...of the children of other influential Washington politicians, walking or standing outside their schools, each identified by name. Surrounding the photos are texts of vicious political rants from a motley variety of radical groups. It's obviously alarming - is there an unstable extremist tracking the loved ones of powerful politicians with deadly intent? But when the FBI is called in, there isn't much the feds can do.

In a wealthy Minneapolis neighborhood, two elderly women are bludgeoned to death. They are apparent victims of a random robbery, though nothing of value appears to have been stolen. But when Lucas Davenport looks deeper, he fears that the victims weren’t so random, and the items stolen were far from invaluable. As a pattern emerges it leads Lucas to...certainly not where he expected. Which is too bad, because the killers are expecting him. And that’s only the first surprise.

Publisher's Summary
The thrilling new Virgil Flowers novel from the #1 New York Times best-selling author.
The superstore chain PyeMart has its sights set on a Minnesota river town, but two very angry groups want to stop it: local merchants, fearing for their businesses, and environmentalists, predicting ecological disaster. The protests don't seem to be slowing the project, though, until someone decides to take matters into his own hands.
The first bomb goes off on the top floor of PyeMart's headquarters. The second one explodes at the construction site itself. The blasts are meant to inflict maximum damage-and they do. Who's behind the bombs, and how far will they go? It's Virgil Flowers's job to find out... before more people get killed.
What the critics say
“[Sandford]’s a thorough professional who knows exactly what he’s doing. Whether you’re new to Sandford or not, whether you’ve ever read a Virgil Flowers novel or not, once you start Shock Wave, you’ll read it straight through, quickly, compulsively, happy the whole time to be in such good hands.” (The Washington Post)
“Wry humor, a fully realized lead, and tense atmospherics...Sandford effortlessly conjures up the rhythms and personalities of a small town in one of his best outings to date.” (Publishers Weekly)
“If Shock Wave is any indication, Flowers has a better than even chance of equaling if not surpassing Davenport in the hearts and minds of Sandford’s legion of readers.” (Bookreporter)

I think I'm in love with Virgil Flowers!
. . . he can't possibly exist only in the author's imagination, because he's way too real. Looks like a surfer, talks to God, fly-fishes and charms women everywhere he goes. Oh, yeah, and solves cases that puzzle everyone else. I'm a huge Sandford fan, and love the fact that his plots are so intelligent and his characters are true to human nature. What I love about the Virgil Flowers series is getting into the character's mind as he solves the mystery -- in this case, a series of bombings that seem to be aimed at preventing the construction of a monster WalMart-type store in a small town. Every time he appears to be zeroing in on the killer, another bombing occurs and the facts have to be reassessed. Engaging and entertaining. I really like this narrator as well -- he's very laid-back, like Virgil, but he keeps a good rhythm and pace.

Where is the real Virgil?
I was probably the first or second person to download this book as I loved the previous books so much and was anxious for the next chapter. Virgil is one of my favorite series stars alongside Burke's Dave and Hackberry. However, I found this latest Virgil adventure to be quite bland and predictable. The characters were shallow and uninteresting. The fun and funny and sexy Virgil from previous installments seems to be tamed down. Also, for some reason, the name Pyemart was distracting because you knew he was using it in a Walmart sense. There just was no juice to the story. To be truthful, I kept dozing off. If I were you, I'd wait til it shows up on a $4.95 sale. The Virgil we know and love come back!!!

Not the best Virgil ~ but it is still Virgil!
I am bias! John Sandford is my favorite author and he hit it out of the park in May with his latest Lucas Davenport, Buried Prey. I will forgive him this Virgil Flowers. I still enjoyed every minute of this book, but it wasn't as good as the others in the series. He is such a talented writer and so detailed, it was still a great story!

Standard Virgil Flowers fare
This was a good story with good characters and was mercifully void of gratuitous romance. Virgil was even dumped by a woman who didn't appear in the story, except over the phone. Lucas Davenport is simply another "phone" character in this book and his insignificance to the story has allowed me to accept Flowers as a character in his own right, which wasn't the case in the book when Sandford introduced him. A good who-done-it.

Does exactly what you paid for
Virgil Flowers is comfortable as a trusted glove in winter. He stretches as far as he should to provide warmth and still reach around the stuff you want him to. Here he's got a clever locked room puzzle to solve, an ending that wraps snugly around the mystery, and fun characters each created from a minimal number of brush strokes. You'll forget this minutes after its end, but enjoy it from the beginning... Exactly what I paid for.

I always love Sandford's books. His dry sense of humor and clever plots keep me at the edge of my seat. The reader is wonderful, Eric Conger! Virgil good as ever
I was a little hesitant to listen to this at first due to some previous negative reviews. Since I haven't been disappointed by Sanders in the past I decided to go ahead and use my credit to get it. I was not disappointed this was another excellent Sanford book and I think one of the better Virgil Flowers adventures. The story was interesting and alot of twist and turns that kept you guessing who the killer was. I always like how Sanford gives you the point of view of the killer without giving away his/her identity it adds alot to the story. looking forward to Sandford's next book.
