Story
The definitive biography of a legendary athlete. The Shrug. The Shot. The Flu Game. When most people think of him, they think of his beautiful shots with the game on the line, his body totally in sync with the ball - hitting nothing but net. But for all his greatness, this scion of a complex family from North Carolina's Coastal Plain has a darker side: He's a ruthless competitor and a lover of high stakes. There's never been a biography that encompassed the dual nature of his character and looked so deeply at Jordan on and off the court - until now.

Kobe Bryant’s death in January 2020 did more than rattle the worlds of sports and celebrity. The tragedy of that helicopter crash, which also took the life of his daughter Gianna, unveiled the full breadth and depth of his influence on our culture, and by tracing and telling the oft-forgotten and lesser-known story of his early life, The Rise promises to provide an insight into Kobe that no other analysis has.

Story
NBA fans had low expectations for rookie coach Nick Nurse and his Toronto Raptors. But what those naysayers didn't realize was that Nurse had spent the past 30 years proving himself at every level of the game, from youth programs and college ball to the NBA D League and Britain's struggling pro circuit. While few coaches have taken such a circuitous path to pro basketball's promised land, the journey - which began at Kuemper Catholic high school in Carroll, Iowa - forged a coach who proved to be as unshakable as he is personable.

Scottie Pippen has been called one of the greatest NBA players for good reason. Simply put, without Pippen, there are no championship banners - let alone six - hanging from the United Center rafters. There’s no Last Dance documentary. There’s no “Michael Jordan” as we know him. The 1990s Chicago Bulls teams would not exist as we know them. So how did the youngest of 12 go from growing up poor in the small town of Hamburg, Arkansas, enduring two family tragedies along the way, to become a revered NBA legend?

In the history of modern sport, there have never been two high-level teammates who loathed each other the way Shaquille O’Neal loathed Kobe Bryant and Kobe Bryant loathed Shaquille O’Neal. From public sniping and sparring, to physical altercations and the repeated threats of trade, it was warfare. And yet, despite eight years of infighting and hostility, by turns mediated and encouraged by coach Phil Jackson, the Shaq-Kobe duo resulted in one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.

Over the course of his illustrious 21-year NBA career, he elevated trash talk to an art form and never shied away from sharing his thoughts on controversial subjects. In KG: A to Z, published ahead of Garnett’s induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he looks back on his life and career with the same raw candor.

Publisher's Summary
Seventeen-time all-star; scorer of 81 points in a game; MVP; and a shooting guard second only to Jordan in league history: Kobe Bryant is one of basketball's absolute greatest players, a fascinating and complicated character who knew when he was a mere boy that he would be better than Jordan on the court.
The debate about whether he achieved that is a furious one - but Kobe has surpassed Jordan on the all-time scoring list and has only one less championship than Jordan (five to Jordan's six).
The Lakers are the flashiest team in all of sports, and the context in which Bryant played is salacious and exciting. Provocative stories mixed with good old fashioned basketball reporting make for a riveting and essential listen for any hoops fan.

The legend
I wanted to read this book because I know so little about Kobe even though I followed his entire career. This book is very detailed from his mother and father, Kobe as a child, all the way up to to when he retired. You can tell they can't say anything bad because Kobe wouldn't approve it but there is definitely some stories they left out about Kobe. they only kept in the good stuff he did. they even made the rape case not sound that bad in this book.

An Insider's Angle on Kobe!
I listened to Kobe's bio during the winter of 2020. Ironically, Kobe died in a tragic accident on January 26, 2020. I was so deeply moved and saddened by his death because I felt like I had begun to know Kobe as a person through this bio. after his death, I was determined to finish this Audible because it seemed like my only opportunity to know Kobe because he's gone. I have a new found respect for Kobe. i only wish this bio had more info about his family life with his wife and daughters. RIP Kobe and Giana. #24 #8. #MambaOut

Good but not great
I have read this book and Rolands other book about Jordan, and I liked the Jordan book a lot more. As some other reviewers mentioned, a fairly significant chunk of this book focuses on people other than Kobe. Although this is meant to give a perspective about who Kobe was, I was still wanting more about Kobe than was given. I thought a couple areas were rushed through that could have been explored more, as well.
Overall, this is a pretty interesting read. Especially with Kobe’s recent death.

Man, Kobe was amazing
I never was a fan of Kobe or the Lakers, I always liked the other team that still rents the Staple Center. Whenever I watched the highlight reel on Kobe, it was like watching a magician disappearing out of thin air. “Showboat” was an excellent autobiography. I felt that the author didn’t sugar coat anything. Roland Lazenby didn’t leave anything unturned.
