Publisher's Summary

## Can she catch the killer before someone else is silenced for good...?

Detective Hanlon is addicted to violence. She likes the rush, the danger, the losing control...

When Hanlon is suspended from the force for assaulting a suspect, she escapes to the remote Scottish island of Jura, home to the mysterious Corryvreckan whirlpool.

But wherever Hanlon goes, violence is sure to follow.

As soon as she checks into The Mackinnon Arms, Hanlon senses something isn't quite right about the staff at her home for the week.

Sure enough, within days of arriving, the body of a member of staff is found floating in the sea. While police believe she was claimed by the local whirlpool, Hanlon isn't so sure.

As she pieces together the evidence, dark secrets begin to unravel. Can Hanlon work out what is going on before another floating body is found...?

Discover an addictive crime series, perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Bryndza and Lisa Regan.

Great plot, excellent narration

The narrator does an excellent job. I enjoyed this book and the plot kept you guessing. I am undecided as to whether I like the protagonist or not… Great story regardless. Worth a listen.

Very suspenseful!

I quite enjoyed this novel. It had a lot of interesting dynamics. However I think it might have been even better had I not had to struggle with the thick accent sometimes. While the accents were akin to the location of the story, I found myself rewinding on occasion to try and understand exactly what was being said.

Predictable

I knew who did it 1/2 way through. Thank goodness the narrator was good.
I also had a hard time with the descriptions of the main character and the other women. Misogamy anyone?

Decent plot, good narration but needs better editing.

Needs better editing.

Narration was quite good, and plot was engaging with a few twists. With editing it would be a better listening experience. Repetitive points and disjointed descriptions made it rather off putting such as '...alternating with breathless weezing as he fought for breath...'.
I'm not particularly observant, but even I noticed the main character's eye colour first described as blue, then grey. And this sloppiness: at 6:26 "...as she retrieved her case and clothes from her room" and then at 6:31 "...she stormed upstairs and packed her bags." That's just lazy editing!

Uncomfortably Dark. Pass.

Alex Coombs introduces his clever and driven (if hard-bitten & jaded) lady detective by sending her on an R&R trip to a remote "get-away-from-it-all" Scottish Island. London DI 'Hanlon' is revealed to be in dire need of an Anger Management intervention - constantly fighting the urge to beat the sh*t out of everyone around her (which she does a couple of times). Coombs surrounds his perpetually smoldering protagonist with leering perverts, hedonistic swingers, drug addicts, and ex-cons (in an ostensibly classy 'MacKinnon Arms' holiday hotel, no less).
I understand that Coombs is going for "gritty", but the ugliness is too much. He is strikingly heavyhanded in painting his depressing setting.

The narration by Carolyn Bonnyman doesn't help, either. She is professional - but notably subpar. Her diction, tone, and comfortable Scottish accent/timbre are creditable (and her voice-acting is worthy of praise), but she makes glaring errors: for example, reading annoyingly too slowly.
Her worst crime, however, is a ridiculously stochastic cadence - choosing to insert looooooong pauses into the text for some reason.
Setting playback speed at 1.25X corrects some of the deficiencies in Bonnyman's reading, but even with that adjustment the performance isn't great.

Taken altogether, I judge 'Silenced For Good' an "average" Mystery with "below average" presentation.
It rates a mere 5.5 stars out of 10.
If it weren't offered for free as part of the 'Plus' catalog, it likely wouldn't merit a try at all. If you're a diehard fan of Suspense/Crime Thrillers & you can get it for free, however, it's not a crazy waste of time (I suppose).

Why?

Why do people think they can write the opposite sex, men writing women, women writing men. I knew before I checked and within the first 10 min this was written by a man. This would be soo much better and possibly more believable the protagonist were a man.
The narration is ok, but she kind of clacks her teeth sometimes, and I can clearly hear other oral noises. Sorry Alex
