Publisher's Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The 6:20 Man comes a twisting new psychological thriller in which two women—one a former detective, the other a dangerous con artist—go head-to-head in an electrifying game of cat and mouse.

Mickey Gibson, single mother and former detective, leads a hectic life similar to that of many moms: juggling the demands of her two small children with the tasks of her job working remotely for ProEye, a global investigation company that hunts down wealthy tax and credit cheats.

When Mickey gets a call from a colleague named Arlene Robinson, she thinks nothing of Arlene’s unusual request for her to go inventory the vacant home of an arms dealer who cheated ProEye’s clients and fled. That is, until she arrives at the mansion to discover a dead body in a secret room—and that nothing is as it seems.

Not only does the arms dealer not exist but the murder victim turns out to be Harry Lancaster, a man with mob ties who used to be in Witness Protection. What’s more, no one named Arlene Robinson works at ProEye.

In the blink of an eye, Gibson has become a prime suspect in a murder investigation—and now her job is also on the line until she proves that she was set up. Before long, Gibson is locked in a battle of wits with a brilliant woman with no name, a hidden past, and unknown motives—whose end game is as mysterious as it is deadly.

Disappointing

The story was far fetched and too long- kept hoping it would end, and the male acting voice was unbelievable and irritating.

Hard to get too interested in the characters

Didn’t really get too interested in the characters. Parts of the book just don’t seem realistic. Hope we don’t see these characters make a return

Perhaps easier to follow as a hard copy

Have greatly enjoyed previous books by Baldacchi. This one captures the complexity of humans across many life experiences. Perhaps it would be more enjoyable in hard copy, as it felt lengthy. The audiobook pattern of using “He said”, “She said” became tedious over time.

Not his very best but entertaining

I’ve read (and listen to) most of David’s books put this one right in the middle of the pack: entertaining, but not his best. The story was interesting but not riveting. The acting was good but not great. I’d recommend it to a Baldacci fan but not for a first, second, or third read. There are lots of stronger choices to be made first.

Not my favourite

I have long been a fan of Baldacci but this book had me anxious for it to end. It was long, predictable and the performance was grating at times. If this becomes a series I do not intend on continuing it, sorry.

Where’s his editor? MIA on this one.

The dialogue sounds like it was written by a 12 year old. The characters motivation and actions are not believable, even for a thriller book. It was good enough to pass the hours while driving when I had no other options, but I can’t recommend.

Disappointment from the start

I was excited for this latest book and was disappointed right from the get go, the narration is mediocre at best, but even worse is the constant & direct undertone of male bashing while trying to focus on how hard it is for a single mother / woman, totally ruins the story and lost me a few chapters in, total waste of $
