Publisher's Summary

The Bards of Shkoder hold the country together. They, and the elemental spirits they Sing - earth, air, fire, and water - bring the news of the sea to the mountains, news of the mountains to the plains. They give their people, from peasant to king, a song in common.

Annice is a rare talent, able to Sing all four quarters, but her brother, the newly enthroned King Theron, sees her request to study at the Bardic Hall as a betrayal. To his surprise, Annice accepts his conditions, renouncing her royal blood and swearing to remain childless so as not to jeopardize the line of succession. She walks away from political responsibilities, royal privilege and her family.

Ten years later, Annice has become the Princess Bard and her real life is about to become the exact opposite of the overwrought ballad her fellow students at the Bardic Hall wrote about her. Now, she's on the run from the Royal Guards with the Duc of Ohrid, the father of her unborn child, both of them guilty of treason - one of them unjustly accused. To save the Duc's life, they'll have to cross the country, manage to keep from strangling each other, and defeat an enemy too damaged for even a Bard's song to reach.

Finished it in two days!

Immensely enjoyable, wholesome, queer, high fantasy. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

This was one of my favourite series growing up and this audio book version did not disappoint. The narration was really well done with the characters voices being different enough but not moving into cartoonish. A great fantasy story!

A fun multiple point introduction to the world

It was fun walking through the world with these characters and experiencing the story from different points of view. Despite the Kingdoms and magic the core of the story is the creation of a New family and the healing of an old one. The magic system is fairly straightforward and easy to understand as it is part of this world as a natural force. While not sexually explicit there are both cute scenes of intimacy and implied abuse. It was an easy listen and I definitely enjoyed it especially the dialogue of the characters but I can't say i was wowed by it either. Maybe the later books will do more for me but for now I would say it was solid listen.

Interesting story

I liked this story. I found the magic system to be interesting and the characters believable. There aren't any info dumps like there are in many other fantasy books. There was a good mix of personal conflict, internal conflict and conflict between kingdoms. I liked the two leads and their interactions. Overall good performance.
