On principle, I try to avoid giving five stars. If I did, how would I differentiate the very good from the exceptional? Common acceptance is that 3 stars equals an enjoyable, yet mediocre performance.
It was not that.

K.J. Parker's narrative style is pristine; his world-building, on par with the real thing. The constant repackaged references to our own real world and history are somehow original and extremely familiar at the same time. It may he an acquired taste to some, but I love it.

Sister Svangerd is an extremely solid novel, with enjoyable and colorful characters. It may be a little less driven than some of the author's standalone novels, but the ride is still extremely enjoyable.

I wish 4.5 stars was an option

I thought this had a great premise but it just went too big too fast. Like can we see the homicidal nun do some of that instead of listening to this dude ruminate?
