Publisher's Summary

Two sisters. Two special agents. One War.

Sisters, Secrets and Sacrifice is the incredible true story of British special agents Eileen and Jacqueline Nearne, two sisters who risked everything to fight for our freedom during the Second World War.

The death of an eccentric recluse is rarely an event to be given more than a few lines in a local newspaper. But when, in September 2010, police were called to a tiny, cluttered flat in Torquay and discovered the body of local "cat lady" Eileen Nearne, they also found a small bundle of possessions that told an amazing story.

For Eileen Nearne had been an agent for the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War, going undercover in Nazi-occupied France to send wireless messages of crucial importance to the Allies. Astonishingly, Eileen was not the only special agent in the family - her sister Jacqueline had also been an SOE. Rarely had two members of the same family sacrificed so much to such dangerous work.

Sisters, Secrets and Sacrifice pays tribute to these fiercely patriotic women with hearts of courage, who fought for freedom at much personal cost. While Jacqueline narrowly avoided capture several times, tirelessly couriering secret documents for the resistance, Eileen was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo before being incarcerated at Ravensbrück concentration camp. She was only 23.

This is a true story of triumph and tragedy, of two sisters who sacrificed themselves to defend our freedom, who stood shoulder to shoulder during the darkest of days.

Extraordinary courage of Ordinary people!

This story is so incredible, because it is a true story. It is about two sisters; Jacqueline and Eileen Nearne who went undercover for the SOE(Special Operations Executive). Churchill's specially trained agents who were sent behind enemy lines. These are my absolute favourite stories to read and listen to. WW II history has been my hobby since grade school. I can't think of two family members who undertook such dangerous work, as it generally was NOT allowed. The two sisters spoke French well, and knew customs and mannerisms etc. having been raised in France. Their dangerous adventures are well written by Susan Ottaway and the narration by Catherine Harvey is excellent.(Being a musician-drummer-singer), the voice is most important to me, and I listen carefully and often before I choose. It is great when one finds an amazing, true story with a narrator made for it! This book was thrilling, as the Gestapo was hard on their trail from the moment they landed in France. If caught the penalty was most often torture and death. Eileen was actually caught by the Gestapo; roughly handled(tortured), and sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp at one point. In their early twenties these two brave souls risked everything for their love of both countries. Their courage, resourcefulness and patriotism were remarkable, and I would wish that their stories and similar ones would be taught in high schools on a regular basis. 5 Stars across the board. So thankful to have been able to find this audiobook at Audible. Can't wait for my next listen(Ron Larocque-Audible Member since 2010(US & UK), and now Canada for a year.)-#Audible1
