Publisher's Summary

The 17th novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times best-selling October Daye urban fantasy series.

October is very happy with her life as the second daughter of her pureblood parents, Amandine and Simon Torquill. Born to be the changeling handmaid to her beloved sister August, she spends her days working in her family’s tower, serving as August’s companion, and waiting for the day when her sister sets up a household of her own. Everything is right in October’s Faerie. Everything is perfect.

Everything is a lie.

October has been pulled from her own reality and thrown into a twisted reinterpretation of Faerie where nothing is as it should be and everything has been distorted to support Titania’s ideals. Bound by the Summer Queen’s magic and thrust into a world turned upside down, October has no way of knowing who she can trust, where she can turn, or even who she really is. As strangers who claim to know her begin to appear and the edges of Titania’s paradise begin to unravel, Toby will have to decide whether she can risk everything she knows based on only their stories of another world.

But first she’ll have to survive this one, as Titania demonstrates why she needed to be banished in the first place—and this time, much more than Toby’s own life is at stake.

Disappointing After The Last Book

With the way things ended in the last book I was hoping for a little more than what I got in this book. The book was extremely slow and repetitive. It took way too long and way too much of revisiting the series history. The actual resolution when it came was so fast and convenient (aside from a little danger and suffering)
But all in all 80% of the book is just another version of Toby that is not really believable and went on far too long.
Even though I was disappointed it was still a decent read and recommended for anyone who reads the series

Good - Not for the October Day Novice

This was not the best October Day adventure (that's not saying it was bad) but it was still worth the read. It's a classic "what if". It is admittedly pretty standard, resident baddies do something that threatens all of faerie and Toby finds herself right in the middle of it with no way out but to do the most insane/dangerous thing that will absolutely involve her bleeding (which I am always here for). It is definitely nostalgic to see established characters act out of character. It is an obvious curtain call for several characters and a reintroduction of old characters. That makes is a very poor book to read for a first time Day reader, or even for someone who has read a few books in the Day series. This is hardcore Day. I have read them all and still had to search my memory for some of the "deep cuts". All in all this was a fun "end" to a series that serves as a treat for Day fans.

Another October Adventure

Pretty cool different pov from October. I think it's great that her family and adopted family always come through. I don't want to give anything away, but listen with an open mind if you didn't read the description first. I like the surprise of reading the next in the series without reading the description first. Stick with it, and you'll enjoy another top-notch adventure! I can't ever say enough of how much I love this world and the characters in it. The gal reading it is amazing every time.

Struggled with this story

Reading this reminded me of the original Toby Day books where Toby was the helpless victim. She is once again the helpless victim, this time in an alternate version of Faerie. This is a pretty painful experience for those who have stuck with the books and moved on with the stronger independent version of October.

Many of the characters we have come to know and love are missing for most of the book (or are unrecognizable as their alternate form). There is a lot of revisiting the past or discussing an alternate history of this new world we hopefully (!) won't have to see again after this book.

Worth the wait

I love October Daye. I thought this book was a great way to see all the characters and their potential flaws and strengths. A what if. I now genuinely love Simon.

Painful but brilliant

In the interest of not dropping spoilers I’ll keep my criticism to myself. That said this version of Toby raked my last nerve but the story itself was twisty, bendy, and satisfying in the end. As usual, the performance was excellent.

A decent story that's missing all our favorite ppl

I enjoyed this book, but probably less than any of the other 16 books. Most of the people we have come to know and love were missing from the story and I was disappointed that it was completely from October's perspective. Many things seemed to be rushed or left not completely wrapped up. I'm not unhappy to have read this book, but for the amount of content, compared to the last book for example, this felt more like a novella side story than an actual addition to the plot. It does seem like an excellent setup to create new problems in October's world and hopefully the next book can be more detailed and compelling because of this story.

Sleep no more

Slow to start after the end of the last book. Once you realized where the story was going, I enjoyed it thoroughly, like all the rest of her books

Wonderfully excruciating

I LIVED this book. However, this was likely the hardest in the series for me to listen to because I HATE when Tybalt and Toby are separated from each other. Once we got further into the story, I could listen more regularly. Seanan McGuire is a master at pulling you into her world and making you care deeply and empathize with her characters. This book was no different and maybe even more so.
