Publisher's Summary

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the number one New York Times best-selling series.

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman.
My only “superpowers” are that I turn into a 35 pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I'm going to need them.

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill - until she locked her doors against them. They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts. They abandoned their prisoners and their pets. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.

Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses. But if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction. It can make you do anything - even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.

It won't, can't, remain.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

Fantastic!!

How do you keep writing stories in the same series and they keep getting better and better (also knowing that they started off really good)? I’m not sure, but this book is the top of the series, in my opinion. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Kudos to excellent narration as well.

Breath Catching

I LOVED it. Patricia Briggs has yet to write an instalment I do not thoroughly enjoy. Lorelei King is synonymous with the Mercy Thompson series. Another wonderful performance. The story progressed nicely and I had a few breath catching moments that have me greatly appreciating the end. I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

Heck of a story

Patricia briggs does it again. if you give this series a chance you wont regret it. I love the Mercyverse and Smoke Bitten is a great addition to the series. I only wish we'd had more time with Sherwood Post (who is he!!!!!) and Kyle. They are such fun characters and it's joyful falling into their world. Once again Lorelei King does a fantastic job bringing all the characters to life. If I had any complaints its that there really wasnt any storyline progression for the overall series until the final hour and a half of the book. Dont expect to get any answers to long standing questions, but be prepared for a wonderful plot twist and a surprise return. overall it was a fun read but sort of felt like a filler book leading up to the new alpha and omega in 2021. Hopefully we get some answers. There isn't really a single big bad in this book just smaller issues that when all bundled together make for an enjoyable listen. 5 stars

Loved it & love this series

I love these books, I've loved this series for a decade now and adore any opportunity to be immersed back into Mercy's world. Mercy is one of my all-time favourite, kick-ass heroes. Briggs' storytelling is technical enough to keep me satisfied with details, but not too much to over-do it. One thing I was surprised by in this book was the added curse words, that's new! I like that Briggs' has let a few f-bombs fly, I think it adds a realness to the characters. Briggs' world and character building, as in her other works, are on-point, immersive, funny and interesting. I loved the action, the other-world descriptions that added a fresher element to the story line and, as always, Mercy's humour, cunning and relationship managing with those she loves was excellent. I'm so happy to know that this series will continue!

WORTH THE WAIT!!!

I don’t know why this one was one of my most expected books of the year. It was a “I CANNOT WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT” book! I was also afraid that my high expectations would make this book feel not as good as it should because this has happened to me before - with books, movies, and other things. Well, I shouldn’t have worried. The book was awesome. And it met my high expectations wonderfully! As I don’t want to leave spoilers I can only said that Mercy did what she does best! And to not miss this installment of the Mercyverse! It was worth the wait! Recommended audiobook!

Sad but good

I noticed that this book had a more serious tone in it than the others, understandably so with everything that was going on. I loved it like I love all her books in this series, it was just sad. But sometimes you need a little sad.

This was boring.

I've read and re-read this series multiple times. I had to force myself not to skip whole sections. You could honestly just read the reviews with spoilers and save your money. A lot goes on. Very little is interesting or exciting. This series usually blends the interesting and the exciting together quite well. And I was able to figure out the big secret. This whole book could've been about ONE of themany threads and been so much more interesting. The narrator did her usual good job, so there's that.

Not my favorite of the series

I usually love each new book in this series more than the last but that was not the case with this one. The storyline was a bit hard for me to follow. Lorelei's performance was the best part. Her wide range of voices and consistence with pronunciation and personalities is almost unmatched.

wonderful everything as always

I love that Lorelei King excels at giving each character their own voice and I *never* have to question who is speaking. Patricia Briggs has delivered yet another amazing and complex story furthering my love of Mercy and the Mercyverse itself. I can't wait to find out what happens next given the return of an "old friend" in this book!

Different

I love this series, the past two books though haven't been my favorite. The storyline I struggle with keeping my attention in quite a few parts. This one i struggled with what Adam was or wasn't through the book...

Slow Start

The first half felt a bit didactic. Only when Mercy confronted Adam, and after the totaling of another car, did it pick up tempo. After that, I couldn’t put it down! The narrator is as good as usual, but the lack of contractions in everyday conversation sounds odd.

An interesting turn

So if you are wondering if this book as good, or if this series is good and if this book lives up to the rest of the series the answer is yes to all. This series is held up there with the greats of PNR and/or Urban Fantasy with Dresend Files, Kare Daniels, and such for a reason for any new comers. Yes it is one of the few series that sits in the middle of the two subgenres, as it balance relationships and plot pretty evenly though it does tip between the two based on the book, this one is a relationship book. Over all this is one of the best books I've read this year. None of my typical grips are here, it shows more than tells, it properly describes things and best of al there are no politics. If want a strong female character done properly, Mercy is right here, feel free to take notes. Personally one of my favorite things about this book and series is that the story doesn't end with the two MCs get hitched, which was back in book three if I remember right. Anyway I digress, I enjoy that the married couple behave like a married couple, there is no stupid false drama everything organic, and I wish more married authors did this. I also enjoy that this series focuses on Celtic, Slavic, and to a lesser degree Native American myths rather than Norse or Greek, and does so rather well. In the end, yes buy this book if you follow the series. Yes buy this series if you like good writing. And yes buy this book because three times the charm.

A solid addition

Not a standout, for me, in the lineup of Mercy Thompson-verse stories, but definitely the fun paranormal romp I expect from one.

Briggs & King at their best

Any Briggs is a good story and Lorelei King has definitely become Mercy's voice in my head. Full of awful, creepy, funny and endaring moments
