Publisher's Summary

Vampire hunter Anita Blake is no stranger to killing monsters. It’s part of her job as a Preternatural U.S. Marshal, after all. But even her experience isn’t enough to stop something that is bent on destroying everything—and everyone—she loves.

Anita Blake is engaged to Jean-Claude, the new vampire king of America. Humans think she’s gone over to the side of the monsters. The vampires fear that their new king has fallen under the spell of the most powerful necromancer in a thousand years.

In the midst of wedding preparations—including getting Edward, aka U.S. Marshal Ted Forrester, fitted as best man—Anita gets a call that the local police need her expertise at a brutal murder scene linked to a nationwide slaughter of vampires and humans, dubbed the Sunshine Murders.

But there is more than just a murderer to catch: an ancient evil has arrived in St. Louis to challenge Jean-Claude for his crown, his life, Anita, and all they hold dear. Even with Jean-Claude’s new powers as king and Anita’s necromancy, it isn’t enough; they must embrace their triumvirate or allow primeval darkness to spread across the country, possessing first the vampires and then the humans. Evil will triumph unless Jean-Claude and Anita can prove that love conquers all.

What a disappointment

Why did I even preorder? This is not a complete book. Laurel K used to be my favourite author a long time ago. Before the stories were spoiled by unnecessary sex. I mean so much sex. And poly talk. So many men I can't keep track of. And this book wasn't even a whole story. Just relationship politics. Started with a good antagonist, but then it's back to relationship bs. Where's the action? I don't think Anita pulled her gun once. Or wore her knives. I was thinking how are they going to defeat the bad guy with only one hour left, and they're still figuring out triumvirates... Oh, wait, they're not. I'll have to think long and hard if I spend another credit and a LKH book.

half of a story

Same greaat writing stye with awesome description. BUT - and this is a big but - it is ony the first haf of the story. This left me feeling cheated as a consumer. I don't mind cliff hanger endings in a series, but this had not even reached a climax and was still in the rising action/lead in period.

...

⚠️ Spoiler Alert ⚠️

It's a cliffhanger. I hate that trope sometimes used to boost sales. disappointing to see Laurell do it too. Alexis was wonderful as ever in her reading though.

This is used to be my favourite series but I’m just not sure any more…

Well that ended abruptly. Like others have said probably the most disappointing novel of the series so far.

I really had thought Laurell was getting away from the harlequin sex novels and back to what Anita does best in her past few novels kick ass… her first novels of this series Anita was such a kick ass, then I dunno, they became very sex novels with some mystery and detective…sigh. Just bummed out on this one I hope this isn’t where the series is going. It really feels like half a novel, or totally unfinished, like was she forced to push this out before the story was really ready to be released???

Half a Novel

I used to really like this series back when Anita was a bad ass. Now all she does is have sex with multiple people and talk about her feelings. Two storylines were introduced in this novel. One was the sunshine murders and the other a new ancient vampire. neither story was developed or resolved. When the story ended I kept thinking "That's it. Where is the rest of it." It was poorly written and executed. It felt like half of a book. Very Disappointed.

Endless sex scenes and relationship politics

I love Anita, but I had enough of long winded sex scenes. We need more crime fighting, less sex . More Edward less Richard and everyone else lusting after Anita.

So many words!

I’m a big fan of LKH and the Anita series but I’ve noticed such a shift in the focus of the stories. They’ve gone from a story with some sex, to a poly/sex story with some other stuff. And so much page time on over and over explaining everything. We all know the dynamics, although you need a wall chart to figure out who isn’t sleeping with Anita. I am sad that half the book is talking about who is food for who. And the person reading needs to learn how to pronounce Jean Claude. It’s a French name. Not Jean Clod.

Just finish one plotline

This explains why there's a second book coming this year. There are at least 4 threads and not one of them gets solved.

Proust for the supernatural.

fantastic reading/acting by narrator. another detail by detail exploration of power, energy, sexuality and relationship, like Proust writing about a series of encounters between supernatural beings.

Disappointed

agree with other reviewer. Nothing was completed . Never a Richard fan, so that didn't do anything for me. I knew they needed to complete the 4th mark, It was really a bit draggy for me.
