Publisher's Summary

An instant New York Time bestseller!

Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this subversive, “delightfully original and whimsical” (Kirkus Reviews) young adult fantasy about what happens after the chosen one wins the kingdom and has to get married to keep it…and to stay alive.

Arek hadn’t thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he’s finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don’t come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next.

As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she’s dead. Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing.

With his eighteenth birthday only three months away, and only Matt in on the secret, Arek embarks on a desperate bid to find a spouse to save his life—starting with his quest companions. But his attempts at wooing his friends go painfully and hilariously wrong…until he discovers that love might have been in front of him all along.

a very cute and entertaining story. misunderstandings and mutual pinning are a winning combo for me.

Such a cute refreshing comfort book

Obsessed with this world. The fact that homophobia/transphobia just didn’t exist in this world and sexuality and gender were just fluid with no expectations was so comforting. This book is so warm and fuzzy and fun and lighthearted. This was really great to escape into. I love the idea of starting the book where the quest ends. I always felt like these parts of the story are my favourite and yet rarely get shared. Someone called this cozy fantasy and I have to agree.

Fanfic turned novel

This has all the tropey goodness of fanfic but that’s also why i nudged it down to a 4. It was a fun world and I liked the characters but the entire plot is miscommunication.

It was good but not excellent

It was difficult to get into at first. I enjoyed it though. A little cliché, and the magic was very D&D esk.

So cute I loved it

Had me kicking my feet and giggling throughout. It is so cliche and sappy. I am so happy every time I pick up a title by Lukens the writing is always so cute and romantic. There are no loose ends and they always conclude so perfectly. If you’re considering picking this up, absolutely go for it.

Cute, with a little cringe

Definitely a cute story, but there were times I was wishing for it to hurry up. In my opinion a couple of unnecessary scenes just to add tension but overall I quite enjoyed the experience.

Cringe for too many reasons

I’m not sure if this is a voice acting thing or a book thing, but I couldn’t even get through it because I was cringing almost every other line. I understand the MC is supposed to be young and sometimes young people are cringe (and that’s okay!!) but holy man. I could not get through this.

Also. There’s way too much preamble. I’m here for the fake marriage and it took WAY too long to get into it. I wanted to love this book so much because the premise is EXACTLY what I like, but between the cringe lines and delivery, I couldn’t stay in it. I couldn’t suspend my disbelief long enough to really enjoy this book. And I’m really, really sad about that.

Solid romance

a sweet romance that milks the "obvious misunderstanding" trope for everything it's worth. Nothing new or sensational, and nothing unexpected, but the main storyline gives what you would expect of a YA romance.

The side stories and characters occasionally pull more interest, each has their own little moment of development.
