Publisher's Summary

Escape from a Spanish Civil War End Execution

A journalist who wants to be a novelist hears the story that a founder of the Falangist movement, Rafael Sanchez Mazas, was put in a group before a Republican firing squad at the end of the Spanish Civil War and survives. He was not hit by the first volley and in the resulting confusion runs into the woods to make his escape. One of the Republican soldiers who fan out to find him finds him hiding but doesn’t bring him in and just walks away. The novel is the story of the journalist’s quest to investigate the story, interview those who know about the story and the protagonists in it.
The story about the execution is told and retold by various people the journalist interviews but is incomplete for the journalist until he knows the truth about the Republican soldier letting Sanchez Mazas escape.

As well as the execution, the novel explores memory of the Spanish Civil War of some who lived through it and how over time memory becomes a story, a story for those who have no experience of the Spanish Civil War and have no witness to it. The story preserves the memory and what truth it captures preserves what really happened and the people involved.

I read the story in Spanish while listening to the Audible version and found the performance very natural and intuitive except for one or two sentences where I thought I would have read the book with a different emphasis on the words.
