Story
The boxes arrive mysteriously, one by one, at Channing Manheim’s fortified compound. The threat implicit in their bizarre, disturbing contents seems to escalate with each new delivery. Manheim’s security chief, ex-cop Ethan Truman, is used to looking beneath the surface of things. But until he entered the orbit of a Hollywood icon, he had no idea just how slippery reality could be. Now this good man is all that stands in the way of an insidious killer—and forces that eclipse the most fevered fantasies of a city where dreams and nightmares are the stuff of daily life.

Story
There once was a killer who knew the night, its secrets and rhythms. How to hide within its shadows. When to hunt. He roamed from town to town, city to city, choosing his prey for their beauty and innocence. His cruelties were infinite, his humanity long since forfeit. But still... he had not yet discovered how to make his special mark among monsters, how to come fully alive as Death. This is the story of how he learned those things, and of what we might do to ensure that he does not visit us.

Located off a desolate stretch of Interstate 50, Desperation, Nevada, has few connections with the rest of the world. It is a place, though, where the seams between worlds are thin. And it is a place where several travelers are abducted by Collie Entragian, the maniacal police officer of Desperation. Entragian uses various ploys for the abductions, from an arrest for drug possession to "rescuing" a family from a nonexistent gunman.

More horror or sci-fi than a mystery
I haven't read this author in about 20 years and I doubt I will again for another 20. I like mysteries and this was mis-categorized. It was gruesome, overly descriptive, and boring. I would have quit part way but never remembered to find something different before being in the car etc. I'm clearly in the minority since he's sold a bazillion books. I also did not enjoy the speaking voice for the male lead but minor issue compared to the story itself.

Does anyone listen to these recordings to proof?
i am enjoying this book---one of Koontz's best and the narrator is good-ish, BUT HE MISPRONOUNCES EASY WORDS AND IT'S GETTING TO ME!
Every character, even a college educated newspaper reporter and intelligent scientist pronounce libRary as LIBERRY!
Who says that past kindergarten (not kinnygarden).
Producers of these recordings should be more careful---at one point, he said that someone who was driving "barked" instead of "braked."
Sigh

Koontz has an amazing ability to teach in fiction stories
Has always been a fan!
Koontz has not failed in structuring a story which holds your attention in such an amazing way. I cannot think of a single thing which I did not like about this audiobook. The narrators tone of voice aids in those who have a little problem hearing.
This is another really deep and well researched literary masterpiece.

Mixed feelings
I absolutely love Dean Koontz and while this story was very intriguing I felt like the it played out too quickly. It could've been stretched out and made into a 5 star novel. still good though, I don't regret purchasing.

Decent offering from Koontz
This is one of Dean's better reads. The story line is strong and the ending remains obscure till the end but makes sense once revealed.
I liked the characters and their development. Strong performance as well.
Overall good choice.

Not my favorite
I read a lot of koontz and love his books. This wasn’t my favorite. The first half of the book moved too slowly for me. I’m kind of shallow when it comes to literature / I’m looking for action not metaphor. I finished the book but gave no idea what it was about. Oh well.
