Publisher's Summary

An instant New York Times best seller!

Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are back in the next Lynley novel from number one New York Times best-selling author Elizabeth George.

When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. They must sort through the lies and the secret lives of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another.

Best in the series!

I have read all the books in this series and have loved them all, but this book raised the bar even higher. The treatment of a very complex issue, the character development and the way the author weaved the story are masterful. Of the last 100 books I’ve read, this one is in the top 5. Can’t wait for next year’s instalment.

Tough topic, well handled I thought

I always enjoy and agonize over these books. Kudos to Elizabeth George for tackling uneasy topics.

A novel both thoughtful and well written

Thank you once again Elizabeth George for not simply writing terrific mysteries with my favourite dashing hero and my all-time favourite character Barbara Havers. This novel as with many others pokes away at the sad underbelly of Big city society.

Difficult, but still delightful

George has never shied from the realistic depiction of difficult, even brutal subject matter, and this latest instalment in the Lynley series is no exception. In a plot that weaves through different cultures, crimes, situations, and areas of London, along with a large and diverse group of both beloved and new characters, she never once lets her reader lose sight of the critical importance of her main theme. This theme is carried, not primarily by Lynley himself, but by several exemplary female characters, including favourites Barbara Havers, Debra St. James, and Deirdre Treherne. The male characters face a significant challenge in living up to the ongoing demand that the sexes relate to each other primarily as people of equal intelligence and worth. George’s ability to steer clear of polemic is one of her great strengths.

Very highly recommended indeed.

A Favourite Author

A gritty story written beautifully. Everything a mystery should be! The construction of the story is as wonderful as the varied characters and the complex plot. Enjoy!

An excellent read!

Great book as always! Very educational as well as entertaining. My only problem with it is the beginning of the book where names and people and how they were involved in the story were very confusing. It bounced around from place to place and character to character too quickly for me to keep up with. Other than that, an excellent read.

THIS IS A HORRENDOUS STORY:

I no longer live in England but I well remember a time when writing this story, as tragic as the subtext may be would not have found a place in the society of Britain.
It goes beyond all rational thought that such a beautiful country that grew through to be what it was through the struggles, difficulties, poverty, charity and sense of pride of it's people has simply been given away to those who wanted to benefit from centuries of toil and politicians who were willing to give their country away so that they could remain in power.
But perhaps saddest of is the acceptances of individual such as the author who don't see what is actually happening, because if she did she would not write such a book

as always

Elizabeth George writes great novels and this is no exception though the entrance of Lynley was somewhat delayed. It was certainly different and enjoyable, a story well told

George tackles huge issues

Bold and brave, Elizabeth George’s latest detective novel focuses on London and on one of the most troubling global feminist issues, female circumcision Noone could do it better and few have ever had the guts to try. A satisfying Detective Inspector Lynley and his still brilliant sidekick Barbara Havers do it again with much slogging through family troubles black and white.

A Difficult Subject

I'm only a few hours into this book, and I figured I should give others a heads up.
This story is very realistic. It includes topics that a lot of people will want to avoid.
For myself, to turn away from the subject is akin to turning away from the girls and women who have suffered (and are still suffering) from this brutality.

What a disappointment!

For all of us who read these books to enjoy the characters of Lynley, Simon, Deborah, Nkata, and Havers, you will be disappointed in this book. There is absolutely no character development of any of the characters we have come to love. We don't learn one new thing about any of them. Instead, Ms. George has just written a plot-driven story with a tedious plot. She has let all Lynley fans down.

Disappointing

Really wanted to like, but felt like a spin out until the writer was ready to conclude, rather than a mystery unfolding.

Conflicted

I have read many of Ms George's books with fascination. Every novel, by Ms George and others, includes details of the society around us. Ms George, in this and a prior book, has chosen to focus on the practice of FGM. I find the practice repulsive, but I have read enough about it elsewhere to know that. I read Lynley novels for escape. I find reading about the practice of FGM (or the threat of it) to be profoundly unpleasant, which motivates me to set aside books that use it in their plots. That's what I did with this one. I will carefully review further books by Ms. George before buying them.

Respectable new contribution to series

No one reading this series should expect meaningful incremental advances in the protagonists’ significantly flawed personal lives. Throughout the series the author has dragged out each element of character development to the point that I often wish Lynley had been the one shot dead on the doorstep instead of Helen. As a consequence of lowered expectations about, and flagging interest in, the main characters, I am better able to appreciate the machinations of George’s murderers and the pursuit of justice in her series. Something to Hide is a fine addition to British detective fiction with plenty of twists and turns and sound police work (if you ignore the passport cockup). Plus the secondary character of Dee at the yard provides much needed humor. Finally, kudos to Ms George for her well researched focus on the tragic mutilation of female infants and girls. I enjoyed this installment, but I’m really ready for some stand alone novels as Lynley and Havers are so static.

Loved it

All of the usual characters are in fine form especially Havers and Linley. Not only do they deal with an interesting case in the Nigerian community, they also face challenges in their personal lives. An outstanding narration by Simon Prebble makes this an engrossing and satisfying experience.

Not disappointed!

First, I live this series and have read all of them through the years. The subject of this book is a tough one, but one that needs light shed on it. I found the beginning a little hard to follow because there are several characters introduced, all seemingly unconnected until finally it all comes together. Simon Vance is a terrific narrator, can’t imagine anyone better. Enjoyed this book very much!

This is a very deep and tragic subject that I feel has been well handled. Be sure to listen to the acknowledgment at the end.

Great story but could have been edited

Elizabeth George presents a well crafted, researched, thought out mystery that is as much about characters as who done it. Great insight into how we subconsciously fall into old forms of behavior, how we kill those who we love acting what we think is proper behavior. That said it could have been shorter with less description.

Too many coincidences

I enjoyed this book yet had to supress my disbelief over too many coincidences occuring in it. I've read almost all the books in the series and this is the first where the plot seems too artificial and a couple of twists in side story lines at the end were too weak.
