Publisher's Summary

“Kleypas is a romance gem, a queen among a vast royal court of historical romance authors.” (Entertainment Weekly)

A classic Lisa Kleypas love story in which a marriage in name only becomes something more....

The toast of the town....

All London is at Julia Wentworth's feet - and anything she desires is hers for the asking. But the glamorous leading lady guards a shocking secret: a mystery husband whom she does not know, dares not mention...and cannot love.

For years Damon Savage has been searching for the stranger his parents wed him to without his consent, hoping to legally free himself from matrimony's invisible chains. And he is astonished to discover his "bride" is none other than the exquisite lady he'd hoped to make his mistress! But though his wife by law, Julia will never truly be Damon's - until he conquers her fears, his formidable rivals...and her proud, passionate, and independent heart.

promoting violence

(spoiler alert) She ends up with the man who kidnaps her! I find shocking that in our day and age authors still write stories where the remake protagonist falls in love with the man who subjected her to violence. Hello rape culture!

An Unusual Story

This is one of LK's best stories. As an avid listener of her stories, I found this one (and Book 2) really interesting as LK developes vivid alive characters which brings the reader/listener right into their world and into their lives. How can a woman in the 1800s have it all? Career, family, husband.... Well, she must first have a husband who loves her and be willing to give his wife the space and time to figure it all out to his advantage and to their overall happiness! There are unexpected twists and turns which holds your interest and makes you root for an happy-ever-after ending. Landor is an excellent narrator .

A theater lovers dream!!

I love this book! I love Lisa Kleypas! As a former actress and theater lover, I loved hearing about the styles of acting in Victorian England! Before the Stanislowski method there was… The naturalist actors and those are used expressive motions to express the action. I loved hearing about the different lifestyles the actors had to lead in order to achieve their careers in the theater!

Rosalyn Landor is always amazing and perfectly voiced the characters once again!

Lisa Kleypas takes us into the Regency world of theatre

In each of her novels. Lisa Kleypas brings her characters into different worlds- sometimes that of the growing merchandise setting of a department store, or that of the Bow Street runners, or that of the first female physician in London. Here the life of the actress who wants both a professional career and love, marriage and a family provides a fascinating backdrop for one of her typical romantic tales. She is a master of character and plot and a joy to read. The performance by the reader is, as usual, excellent and convincing.

Loved it as ALWAYS she weaves a great story!

Loved the theatre involvement and the quandary it is to choose love over your dream job. Much like I think Grace Kelley faced. Author and narrator are always fantastic. You will really love this performance!

Do not read

I was so disappointed in this book. It is definition of a toxic abusive relationship, in which the hero HAS THE HEROINE KIDNAPPED, and then threats to rape her!!

Endless Redundancy...Sighs

This was awful. It dragged in and on without merit. The main character was supposedly a independent woman and she seemed incapable of doing anything on her own without a man's help. I was so disappointed with this. Why did you make her putty in both Damon's and Logan's hands? I hope Kleypas is not changing her writing style because I do not want to read/listen to anything like this again. Ugh! I want my strong heroine characters back like Pandora and Dr. Gibson.

Worst of Lisa Klypas

I love Kleypas books but this was a dud. Rosalyn Landor is my favorite performer and was the only positive about this experience. Awful story. I have not written a bad review before but since the audibles are so expensive I figured I’d warn others. Such a disappointment when I’ve loved her other books so much.

abduction should cause less trust, not more

it was fine until the part when he had her kidnapped, bound and gagged, and then hauled her away to force himself on her to quote ruin her for other men. she then announced that he was right, she did have to learn to trust people and if she couldn't trust him who could she trust... after he had had strangers kidnap her and abduct her for him to rape. A strong, independent woman as she had proven herself to be would not just capitulate after being abducted if anything that should make her hate him.

Rosalyn Landor was wonderful, as always.

Love the Capital Theater series

The combination of Kleypas's writing style and Rosalyn's narration is always perfection. Rosalyn has the most versatile range of female and male voices, I don't have to ever struggle past the narrators poor perf to get into the story whenever its Rosalyn telling it. 😊
