Publisher's Summary

I hunt demons.

I don’t work for them.

And I promised my mom one thing before she was murdered: Under no circumstances would I ever go near the high demons.

But I’ll break that promise over and over again if it helps me avenge her death.

When my only lead turns to ash in the middle of demon territory, I’m suddenly a dead witch walking. Violence in Samael’s club is an automatic death sentence…unless he can use you.

And it turns out that the most powerful demon in the country has a use for little ol’ me.

Demons are being slaughtered. His demons. And as a bounty hunter, it’s up to me to find out who would dare hurt his people.

I’ve got two weeks to find the killer, and if I fail, I’m bonded to Samael. Forever.

Samael’s certain that I’ll be his, but I’m not the kinda girl who risks her freedom for a demon.

I’m the kinda girl who won’t let anyone get in the way of her vengeance—not even the Machiavellian control freak who thinks he can run my life.

The problem? I’ve pissed the wrong people off.

Now I’m the one being hunted, and someone’s coming for me with everything they have.

But I’m never more dangerous than when my back is up against the wall.

And I’m ready to come out swinging.

Great series start!

I was in a book slump before stumbling upon this series. What a great first installment! I listened to the audiobook version, and am mostly satisfied with the performance rendered by narrator Amanda Leigh Cobb. The pace was quite rapid, but I could slow the speed in my audible app, so that helped.

Danika, the main female character, is everything I hope for in a lead lady: Capable, relatable, has a great sense of humor, and gas a strong moral (well, where it counts) conpass. Readers are given a glimpse into her backstory so she has depth and her actions are understandable.

Danika is pursuing answers about, and seeking justice for, her mother's murder. Her personal quest leads her to crossing paths with a high demon: Samael. He's mysterious, dangerous, and (of course!) delicious. The plot incorporates some detective sleuthing for answers, and Danika's forced bonding (as in, minion) to Samael. Her species/racial views are challenged and she's forced to reconsider life perspective.

Setting takes place in a modern world similar to that of the real world, however, portals between realms were forced open leading to development of paranormals and mythical beings entering the world. As a result, society was essentially restructured to incorporate and adapt to include demons, fae, werewolves, etc.

I don't want to say much more in order to avoid spoilers, but will say I dove into and finished book 2 before coming back here to review.

It was an easy listen

I got this on a whim. It was an ok story. However, I’m aware my rating is due to liking my FMC to not forget herself while in the presence of handsome demon/fae/ etc…
